Project Title: Bright Futures Initiative: Education for Every Child
Project Description:

Every child deserves a bright future, regardless of their current economic situation, which is why New Ransom Temple Academy has created the Bright Futures Initiative. Being located in an economically disadvantaged area, we have witnessed firsthand how the youth and women of our community have suffered due to their unfortunate situations, and because of that, we have taken the initiative to change that. Through the funding of this project, we aspire to provide the children with a safe learning environment to grow and thrive in, not only academically but also emotionally and socially. We will do this by expanding our buildings and acquiring learning materials, which will in turn increase our offered grade levels. This will not only greatly benefit the children of our community but the mothers as well by caring for their children. On top of this, we will have the ability to create a safe and tight-knit community for the women, assuring them that they are not alone in whatever they are going through. Through this project, we are not just building a larger school, but the greater ability to help the community at large.

Project Title: Mental Health School Counseling and Psychological Services
Project Description:

Children’s suicide attempts were up 53% in the US, and various data points indicate an alarming increase in mental health challenges among Colorado youth, as evidenced by:

o High school students are reporting rising levels of persistent sadness and hopelessness.
o The share of Coloradans aged 18 and younger who reported eight or more days of poor mental health in the past 30 days more than doubled in just six years.
o Emergency room visits for mental health reasons among children increased by 140 percent between 2016 and 2021, while for adults, the increase was only 23 percent.
o Visits for self-harm among Colorado children more than tripled.
o Factors contributing to this crisis include:
 Academic pressure: Rising expectations to succeed academically.
 Social media: Increased use of social media platforms.
 Sleep deprivation: Fewer young people getting adequate sleep.
 Broader societal issues: Economic struggles, climate change, and gun violence.
 Isolation: Many young Coloradans lack robust support systems and feel overwhelmed by activities and stressors.
o The pandemic exacerbated the situation, with half of the youth reporting experiences such as emotional abuse, parents losing jobs, and youth experiencing hunger.

Catholic schools in Colorado do not receive public funding for school counselors or psychological services. The Archdiocese of Denver (AoD) and its Office of Catholic Schools (OCS) are pleased to share a program that aligns with the Hermanowski Family Foundation’s funding initiatives – the Mental Health Counseling and Services Program to address these issues. The AoD requests a $10,000 grant to help expand the Program to more schools and thereby improve the lives of over 9,000 Catholic School students.

Project Title: THE RISE UP CHALLENGE
Project Description:

“Anti-Bullying has remained a top priority for schools – before the pandemic, during the pandemic, and post-pandemic.” – Sucada Bell, CIS’ Senior Director of Partnerships
Bullying is an epidemic. The statistics are alarming:
 1 in 3 youth are cyberbullied; Cyberbullying increased 73% during the pandemic.
 160,000 students skip school each year due to bullying.
 Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among teens; bullying is often a factor.
The short and long-term mental health impact of bullying includes anxiety, depression, suicide ideation and more.
The RISE UP Challenge aims to empower youth to see their light within and become upstanders to end bullying. This grant would help us bring a powerful Anti-Bullying assembly, led by a father who tragically lost his 11-year-old son to bullying, to high school students in Chicago. This assembly has been transforming, and even saving young lives, across the country. Witnessing his gripping story, students are empowered to become advocates for change within their school and communities.
Following the assembly, students will participate in workshops such as one led by Humanity Rising Ambassador Devin Moore. Devin turned his painful experience of being racially cyberbullied into purpose and is teaching students about self-esteem and how to be an upstander. Through active engagement, students champion kindness and allyship in their daily interactions. We will also feature outstanding young changemakers on our youth-led podcasts, amplifying their impact and inspiring peers nationwide.

"Since Humanity Rising has been coming to our school, we’re seeing more students love themselves and each other." – Cynthia Leung, Assistant Principal, George Westinghouse College Prep, East Garfield Park, Chicago.

By investing in this project, the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will help students transform their lives and become catalysts for a brighter, more compassionate future.

Project Title: Supporting the Comprehensive Wellness Needs of SVS Staff and Students
Project Description:

Spring Valley School (SVS) is an independent, co-ed, college preparatory school for grades 1-12 whose mission is to provide excellence in education for students with learning differences, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD.

SVS tried to weather a challenging time during the pandemic. However, for SVS students, this period was a great challenge for them academically, mentally, and socially. SVS students need more support to regain what they lost during the pandemic in their executive functioning and fine motor skills. In addition to students struggling, our staff were also struggling with their own mental health and returning to a more demanding role post-pandemic. To provide an excellent education for SVS students, SVS staff must have a healthy approach to their own mental health and wellness. Investing in our employees’ wellness has many benefits, including: improved student health and academic outcomes, increased presence of teachers and their awareness while working, a decrease in the cost of substitutes, etc.

SVS is requesting funding to support the social, emotional, and mental health of students, families, and SVS staff. Funding will support: (1) staff positions focused on social-emotional skill (SEL) development in students and staff: two school counselors, a part-time Speech Language Pathologist, and a part-time Occupational Therapist; (2) professional development in SEL and collaborative problem-solving for SVS staff, (3) SEL lessons in classrooms schoolwide, and (4) staff wellness activities.

Providing all school employees with professional development that focuses on building their own social-emotional skills positively affects students. This is in addition to professional development that teaches adults how to build these skills in children. When schools cultivate the social and emotional competence and capacity of the adults in the building, students feel supported and empowered, can collaborate effectively, and build relational trust.

Total Project Budget: $243,598.00

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): To date, SVS has received funding for this Initiative from the Daniel Foundation of Alabama, $60,000 over two years; Protective Life Foundation, $5,000 (Year 1); Baptist Health Foundation, $5,000 (Year 1); and SVS has set aside $15,000 for this fiscal year, and $50,000 for the next fiscal year, dedicated to this initiative. SVS has the following potential funding sources (grant requests pending): PHS Commissioned Officers Foundation, $10,000; Encompass Health Foundation, $10,000; Malone Family Foundation, $25,000; and Melba Meyer Bayer Charitable Trust, $7,500.

Project Duration: This project is currently planned as a two-year initiative. If funding is received, it would be utilized for Year 2 which is 7/1/2024 – 6/30/2025.
Geographical Area Served: SVS serves children from the Greater Birmingham area, including the following counties: Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby, and Walker.

Project Title: DDX3X Center of Excellence
Project Description:

The DDX3X Foundation respectfully requests $10,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to develop a new Center of Excellence for DDX3X Syndrome.

Discovered in 2014, DDX3X Syndrome accounts for 1-3% of unexplained intellectual disability cases in women and girls and is associated with autism, brain malformations, and epilepsy. DDX3X Syndrome is characterized by intellectual and developmental disability; however, the full clinical spectrum includes involvement outside the central nervous system, with significant implications for medical management. The disorder presents differently depending on the mutation, and individuals with DDX3X Syndrome have symptoms including, microcephaly, corpus callosum hypoplasia, and ventricular enlargement. DDX3X Syndrome is a rare disease, and there is currently no approved treatment.

Our mission is to connect families, resources, and the medical community to advance research for a cure for DDX3X Syndrome. To advance research for DDX3X Syndrome, we have established two Centers of Excellence for DDX3X Syndrome at Rush University and the University of California-San Francisco. At our Centers of Excellence, DDX3X patients and families can receive the best clinical care for DDX3X Syndrome––provided by clinicians and other health professionals who are experts on the syndrome.

In 2025, the DDX3X Foundation will establish a Center of Excellence at Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania and UPENN Medical Center. This will be the first Center of Excellence that can provide a continuity of care––including integrated and specialized pediatric and adult care––to DDX3X patients and families. Our Center of Excellence will provide high-quality care to DDX3X patients and families on the east coast, and support efforts to launch a multi-site natural history study for DDX3X Syndrome. In 2024, the DDX3X Foundation received a generous donation to launch the Center of Excellence, and we are seeking additional resources to close the funding gap needed to open the Center of Excellence and onboard staff members.

Total Project Budget: $100,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Individual Donation – $25,000 (Commited)

Project Duration: January 2025 – December 2025
Geographical Area Served: Primarily states on the east coast, however, all patients and families with DDX3X Syndrome throughout the United States can be served at our Center of Excellence.

Project Title: Mighty Writers Whole Child Approach to Academic Success – PA and Camden
Project Description:

Mighty Writers (MW) teaches kids of all ages to think clearly and write with clarity, so they succeed in school and learn the transformative power of self-expression.

Founded in 2009 by a longtime journalist who understood the transformative power that comes from being a clear writer and communicator, MW serves kids in under-resourced communities, enabling them to have the opportunity to develop their own unique voices and learn from creative and dynamic teachers outside of school.

Now, Mighty Writers teaches 5,000-plus kids each year at our nine Mighty centers across PA and NJ. We offer fun and engaging workshops, one-on-one mentorships, after-school programs and summer camps in safe and inclusive spaces.

Without Mighty Writers, grade-level literacy proficiency in the communities we serve hovers around 35% and high school graduation at 70%. With Mighty Writers, proficiency almost doubles and nearly all our teens graduate high school and go on to college, defying the statistics.
By emphasizing the importance of critical thinking, Mighty Writers prepares kids for all kinds of challenges they’ll face in the future, whether academic, interpersonal or professional.

Because kids can’t think and write when they’re hungry, and their families can’t support them if they’re scrambling to meet basic needs, Mighty Writers Distribution ensures that families have the food and resources they require to focus on what’s important. Each year we give away thousands of pounds of food, millions of diapers and hundreds of books.

Given the challenges our students face, we utilize mindfulness and social-emotional learning to teach kids to be emotionally resilient, cultivate their inner strength, and foster their overall sense of well-being. Ultimately, we want all Mighty students to be advanced thinkers and clear writers — college graduates who continue to reflect our Mighty values of kindness and integrity.
