Project Title: Angel Care Package
Project Description:

We enhance family relationships by involving parents and caregivers in the process of promoting youth hygiene and self-care. We conduct quarterly workshops at churches, community centers, and public libraries to provide resources and education on the best practices for maintaining their child’s hygiene at home using our care packages. We survey parents’ concerns and address them with the help of pediatricians, dentists, and school counselors who answer questions about youth hygiene and support. These workshops are crucial in North Alabama, but we cannot host them without the help of educational leaders and community partners. We invite specialists to join in the effort to ensure that children receive proper hygiene care that promotes healthy living. With our similar values for improving the community and youth development, we can improve the lives of children that we interact with daily. We partner with school counselors, teachers, and principals of Decatur City school district and Madison County school district to hold seminars for children in a large group setting with opportunities for one-on-one mentorship. Currently, we have been able to assist over 250 students with information about proper hygiene while distributing personal hygiene packages that include soap, toothpaste, deodorant, and menstrual items. On a monthly basis, we provide mentorships and one-on-one training to help improve students’ self-esteem, social skills, and communication skills when interacting with their peers.

Today’s Date: 2/22/2024
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Free Youth Programs for 2024 and 2025
Project Description:

The Beaufort County Arts Council (BCAC) provides arts education and community programming throughout our region and offers arts-programming support to schools and nonprofits. We serve over 14,000 people per year at our site (the Historic Turnage Theatre) and many more through community partnerships. Incorporated in 1972, the BCAC serves eastern North Carolina, primarily Beaufort and surrounding counties.

Beaufort is “economically disadvantaged”, with a poverty rate of 18.7% (1.4x that of the state of North Carolina and 1.5x that of the U.S. as a whole) however that rate is not dispersed evenly. Households in our County without children face lower rates of poverty (only 12%) as those households with children (28.8% living in poverty). Families with youth struggle most in our County. Most area schools have had to cut arts programs.

Requested funding will be used to offset the hard costs (teachers, food, supplies) of offering arts & STEAM programming for youth in Beaufort County throughout 2024-2025 free of charge to families and schools, eliminating the stigma felt by families having to request financial aid. We anticipate serving over 200 youth in classes & camps and over 4,000 in free services through this program.

Access to the arts is especially important for youth. Here are just a few examples: (1) Research shows low-income students with arts participation are 5x less likely to drop out
of school (2) Students in arts programs are 4x more likely to participate in science or math fairs. (3) The College Board published evidence that students who took art classes scored an
average of 92 points higher on SATs. Arts education is understood by research to be a “field-leveling” intervention, meaning that while research suggests all students benefit from arts education, its effect on academic achievement is strongest for lowest-income students.

Today’s Date: February 21, 2024

Project Title: L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program
Project Description:

The L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program serves as a preventative and motivational program that emboldens young women to believe in themselves and in their self-worth, and in the ability to achieve their ambitious goals. The L.O.V.E. school-based model is delivered during the academic year in Health Studies or aligned classes in partner public schools in NYC. L.O.V.E. is implemented as a class for girls only with specific instruction that covers social and emotional content, and addresses health education standards. From September to June, mentors and mentees participate in weekly, hour-long sessions, guided by a curriculum that consists of four core components: mental health, reproductive health, college access, and career readiness. L.O.V.E. Program Associates teach the mentoring sessions. L.O.V.E. mentors are female university students who provide group mentoring to program participants during classes. A teacher from each partner school is also present in the classroom.

The L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program provides a space for young women to learn how to strive personally and academically through positive reinforcement, consistency, and understanding. The L.O.V.E. mental health and wellness curriculum covers topics such as self-love, self-awareness, exercise, and meditation. The reproductive health curriculum addresses themes like healthy relationships, friendships, and safe sex. The college and career readiness sections of the curriculum focus on college application, financial aid, and scholarships along with opportunities to attend career panels, corporate site visits, and college tours. In addition, because many of the young women we serve are new immigrants, L.O.V.E. offers English Language Learning support for students to enhance their vocabulary, reading, and comprehension levels.
