Project Title: RISE School
Project Description:

The project addresses our local initiatives and our broader, systemic change initiatives. Our facility serves as a sanctuary for many young individuals through youth programming to include after school and summer school, serving approximately 75-100 Scholars during the year. We teach reading, writing, math, and public speaking through culturally representative material, the arts, and mentoring. We offer guidance, emotional support and family support.

This requires training, technical service, support services (teachers and counselors as well as High School Students), and funds for educational programming, operational costs, meals and snacks, field trips and our arts program. (*In the past field trips included a trip to Richmond where our Scholars were introduced on the House Floor, a trip to the Richmond Science Museum, and a trip to DC to the National Museum of African American History and Culture). Scholars will participate in the arts and perform in a Black History Performance that is beautifully created and produced by our CEO. An All Black Library is available at the facility for the Scholars to build reading comprehension, and also importantly, to see themselves.

Our Scholars will continue to learn to read at or above grade level. We will track and document progress with report cards as well as communication with teachers and caregivers/parents. We will keep building the community presence and support at RISE performances, and at our surrounding public schools to assist with Scholars’ improvements in public school, and RISE families more empowered to advocate for their children. Scholars will continue to have visits with local and state politicians, business owners and community leaders. They will be prepared for not only excelling in their secondary education but beyond that to financial stability and community engagement, where they know that their voice matters and they can advocate for themselves.

Project Title: Pi Day 2024 & Secondary Math Tutoring/Intervention
Project Description:

The “Pi Day 2024 & Summer Camp & After School Math Tutoring” project is a dynamic initiative that seamlessly blends the joy of celebrating Pi Day with the targeted support of secondary math education. Pi Day on March 14th, the project promises an engaging and educational experience for students.

Pi Day festivities will be a highlight, featuring a range of circular activities to make math come alive referencing the ratio of the diameter to the circumference of a circle (pi) . From a spirited pi-eating contest to a thrilling Pi memorization contest, and even a playful pi toss, scholars will be immersed in an atmosphere of fun and curiosity. These activities aim not only to celebrate the mathematical constant π but also create a vibrant and memorable learning environment.

Complementing the festivities, the project addresses the specific needs of students through personalized small group or one-on-one math tutoring/intervention during after school and or in our summer program. These sessions will target key mathematical concepts, enhance problem-solving skills, and through metacognition help scholars think about their answers and increase self-esteem through positive social emotional learning.

The Hermanowski Foundation’s commitment to positive and inclusive change aligns seamlessly with our project’s goals.By infusing the excitement of Pi Day celebrations, with targeted math support, the initiative seeks to transform the way students perceive and engage with mathematics. Beyond the joy of contests and activities, the project aims to foster a deeper understanding of math, contributing to improved academic performance and instilling a lasting appreciation for the subject. It’s an innovative and holistic approach that not only celebrates the magic of Pi Day but also empowers students with the tools they need to excel in secondary math education.

Project Title: Yew Belong Community Services, Inc.
Project Description:

Yew Belong Community Services, Inc. is a non-profit founded in February 2023 to address the gaps in clinical and community support care for the gender-expansive and BIPOC: LGBTQIAP+ community. Our mission is to provide evidence-based, affirmative mental health services and outreach, including psychoeducation, resources, and group support for members of the LGBTQIAP+ community, with an emphasis on supporting further underserved and marginalized persons (i.e., BIPOC, Gender Expansive Persons, Homeless/Housing Insecure, Uninsured, Unemployed). We determined that our name needed to reflect our dedication to diversity, and the yew tree seemed to be an appropriate symbol for the developmental nature of our identities. In 2015, the Fortingall yew tree, the oldest in the United Kingdom, was noted to experience a change in sex between 3,000 and 5,000 years. As our language evolves and people move through their life experiences, they increase their awareness of themselves and we suppose them through the changes and growth.
Yew Belong has five programs for our project. The programs are Professional Counseling Services, Gender Journey Support Groups, Professional Supervision for Provisional Counselors, Consultation, and Professional Mentoring. Our clinicians are trained in several culturally responsive therapy approaches to meet our clients and their loved ones’ needs. The teams’ expertise and focus are on several evidence-based practices; these approaches include but are not limited to Trauma-informed practices, Cognitive and Behavioral Theories, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, EMDR, and Affirmative therapy. We serve the greater Columbia area and surrounding in South Carolina. We also support. Safe Spaces Dinners," which occur on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Which supports homeless LGBTQIA+ youth, including people of color, through their dinners. They reach adolescence, 14-23 years of age, a place to rest and recharge. Proposal Information

Project Title: The "Pink" LemonAid Project
Project Description:

We believes that it takes a village to raise a child. In order for children to flourish and be well, their family and environment must also be well. LemonAid Brunch aims to bridge the gap between home and school, through The LemonAid Project.

The LemonAid Project is a youth mentorship program for children in low-income areas. We facilitate monthly brunch meetings, provide mentorship and coaching, identify needs, help address challenges and wrap services around the child, as well as their family for at least one year.

Because many people lack the proper tools to deal with adversity, depression, anxiety, suicide and substance abuse are increasing at an alarming rate. LAB’s goal is to educate individuals, so they can develop positive coping skills to prevent these outcomes, and change behaviors. Age-appropriate education, consulting, coaching, and guidance in developing emotional intelligence will prepare the children, and their families, to deal with difficult life circumstances and set them up for success in the future. They will learn life skills, crisis management, problem resolution, positive coping, as well as a variety of other skills.

Statistics show that no matter the ethnicity, people in low-income areas and families of poor socioeconomic status do not have access to the best education and opportunities. It is our belief that increasing access, services, and resources, will reduce disparities, decrease maladaptive behaviors, increase self-awareness, and transform their way of thinking. This grant will help LAB be an equity champion for these children.
