Project Title: Youth Aging Out Life Skills Workshop
Project Description:

We seek funding to improve our impact and provide the necessary resources and support. We focus on teenagers and young adults aging out of foster care and adoption centers in Henderson, Las Vegas, and North Las Vegas, Nevada. Our program, PEC Finances, aims to assist this population by improving their emotional and mental health, increasing the likelihood of positive outcomes at the beginning of their life journey, and raising their socioeconomic status.

We are excited to submit our Letter of Intent to the Hermanowski Family Foundation. PEC Finances aims to receive support for our financial literacy and life skills program. We empower young adults by providing high-quality financial education for long-term economic change and freedom.

Since 2015, our organization has conducted workshops to help individuals manage their finances effectively. PEC Finances assists in setting financial goals, creating a household budget, balancing a checkbook, developing a savings program, and using and maintaining credit responsibly. Apart from imparting financial education, we also conduct life skills workshops to help individuals set life goals that guide them in making important decisions, such as choosing a career, living independently, and purchasing a car.

Learning to earn, spend, save, invest, and make wise contributions to the well-being and stability of teenagers and young adults uplifts not only their lives but also the lives of the communities they will live in to become leaders in the communities. With the assistance of the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we aim to expand our reach, enhance our services, and make a lasting impact on their lives.

Project Title: Diverse Books
Project Description:

Research shows two factors are key to the success of any early literacy program: explicit instruction in phonics, and the use of curricular resources that feature characters who share students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Unfortunately, few early reading resources check both boxes. Our goal is to produce books that do.

Visually captivating and realistically illustrated, Monarch Readers are unique in the early literacy landscape because they combine two science-backed approaches to teaching reading.
Designed for use in a phonics instruction curriculum, the readers also align with the philosophy Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop pioneered in her groundbreaking research on literacy: in order to grow into successful readers, children must be able to see themselves in books they read.

A 2023 nationwide intervention study conducted by First Book Research & Insights supports Sims Bishop’s claim. Researchers found that broadening children’s access to diverse books resulted in increases in student reading scores, surpassing nationally expected average yearly gains.
We have already produced the first set of Monarch Readers, targeting kindergarteners. This project will publish the next set, geared toward first- and second-graders.

Notably, the lowest-scoring students tracked in the First Book Study saw the greatest gains, and these are the learners who will gain the most from our project. Because low-income, Black, and Latino children are disproportionately overrepresented in this group, we expect our project to benefit these students the most.

The first set of Monarch Readers are used in schools across the country, including public Title I schools. We have especially granular data on one of these schools showing that 86% of students who used the first set of Monarch Readers were reading at or above grade level by the end of the school year, far exceeding statewide averages. We expect similar results from the next set in the series.

Total Project Budget: $161,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): So far, this project has received $5000 from the Austin Community Foundation and $10,000 from Claire and Carl Stuart. As of this writing, we have also applied to the Brabson Family Foundation and the Chisolm Foundation.

Project Title: Substitute Service to Childcare Providers in Montana
Project Description:

The Raise Montana Substitute Service connects qualified, fully trained substitute staff with State and Tribal Licensed child care programs including Family, Group, Center and Head Start facilities. Raise Montana recruits individuals and supports them in completing all of the Montana state requirements to become a certified caregiver. We then support substitutes in connecting with licensed child care programs via an easy-to-use online platform that saves providers time. The Raise Montana Substitute Service supports the growth of the Early Childhood Education workforce and the sustainability of Montana child care programs by staying fully staffed. Paying for new staff to become fully trained is often an expensive and time consuming barrier for child care programs. The Raise Montana Substitute Service (RMSS) project aims to address the shortage of qualified and trained substitutes in Montana’s early childhood programs. The project’s goals include increasing the number of substitutes in each county, improving the retention rate of substitutes, and increasing the percentage of shifts filled. The expected outcomes of the project are decreased staff burnout, increased availability for professional development, and increased revenue for early childhood programs by maintaining licensing ratio standards. The project involves conducting a statewide marketing campaign, hiring additional staff, and providing orientation stipends for new substitutes. The budget for the project includes allocations for personnel, advertisement, provider relations, and operations.

Project Title: Teen Suicide Prevention Program
Project Description:

With Hope Foundation is dedicated to suicide prevention by improving mental health awareness and education in our schools and communities throughout Southern California. We provide suicide prevention programs, speakers, materials, resources, crisis intervention, postvention support services, counseling referrals, and financial counseling assistance for at-risk teens, ages 12 – 18.

Nineteen years ago, a 14-year-old high school freshman in Orange County, CA, died by suicide. Amber Craig was beautiful, strong, and deeply loved. Although alert to her distress, her family was unaware of the signs and risk factors for suicide. As a result of this tragedy, With Hope, the Amber Craig Memorial Foundation was established. Since our founding in 2005, we have brought our suicide prevention and mental health awareness programs to over 325,000 students, teachers, parents, staff, and community members.

According to the CDC, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10 -14 and is the 3rd leading cause of death for ages 15 – 24. Mental health in teens showed a 31% increase in mental health-related emergencies, a 93% increase in depression and anxiety, and a 51% increase in suicide attempts for girls ages 12 – 17. Suicide can often be prevented through education, awareness, early intervention, treatment, and good postvention care.

With Hope Foundation is dedicated to breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Our goals are to promote open communication, educate, equip, and empower teens, by providing them with the knowledge needed to recognize the warning signs and risk factors of suicide and provide critical, life-saving interventions.

Please consider partnering with us to meet our goal and help us make a life-saving difference.
