At A Fighting Chance, our upscale gym offers our participants a premium and specialized training experience, catering to their specialized training needs. The facility features custom-made bags and mats, designed for different punches, along with a comprehensive inventory of weights, pads, bands, skipping ropes, and custom gloves.

Through the leadership of professional fighter Chase Gibson, and in partnership with Jenni’s Flowers, our program is specially designed to provide a life-changing MMA learning experience for at-risk youth in LA County. The program follows a structured curriculum that emphasizes holistic development, nurturing the mind and body by instilling essential life skills that will have a positive impact on their future and education.

Through our year-round programs, we offer tools that strengthen educational performance, and promote fitness and health, addiction prevention and rehabilitation, and mental wellness; while promoting diversity and inclusion through multilingual (English, Spanish, Russian, and Serbian) programming. Our program offers foundational basics, conceptual understanding, and gradual development, guiding participants as they progress throughout their educational journey and prospective MMA career.

We service approximately 500-650 participants each year, with many of our participants coming from our partnering organizations including Dangerfield Institute of Urban Problems, Awakening Recovery, Living Now Recovery, West Wind Recovery, Monarch Recovery Sober Living, Dream Catcher’s Foundation, The Better Fight Fund, and Cando.

We are committed to inclusivity. Our outreach and services are designed to be culturally appropriate and engage diverse communities, including Indigenous and Transgender. We service approximately 70 percent of people of color, to foster a sense of belonging and empowerment for participants.

Our efforts address the economic challenges faced by the community, as we acknowledge the impact of poverty on children’s physical, emotional, and behavioral health, emphasizing the need for interventions to support their educational attainment and social-emotional growth.

Project Title: Muse & Machine 2D animation Program
Project Description:

One of our out of school STEM program focuses on 2D Animation. The program is geared to introduce advanced technology in the arts to black and brown youth. This program runs three sessions throughout the year for a combined total of 45 hours in which the youths will learn professional techniques in illustration and the class will set the foundation for more advanced and higher level animation styles and techniques. The youths will learn how animation art is created from cartooning and character design to visual STORYTELLING and 2D CHARACTER ANIMATION. The classes are taught by a graduate of Tufts University, a lifelong fine art creator and Award Winning Author of 2 children’s books. In April 2021, The Pew Research Center states that:
The long-term outlook for diversity in the STEM workforce is closely tied to representation in the STEM educational system, particularly across the nation’s colleges and universities. (Nadeem et al.)
This demonstrates the apparent need for an early introduction to our programs to better serve many aspiring Black and Latino students across our city and communities. This is just one marker for our at risk population in our area in relation to the academic achievement gap. Our Program is one solution to closing the academic achievement gap and enriching the education of our youth in an affordable manner. Upon completion of the program we host a parent night event where the participants showcase their final projects. The instructor compiles each project into a final group project that is added to our Social Media for future viewing.
Unfortunately in 2024, many youth still fall behind with no enrichment, support and no STEM structured activities because parents cannot afford to place them in academically focused programs such as the animation program we offer.
