Project Title: Young Audience Matinees and School Outreach
Project Description:

The Ross Ragland Theater and Cultural Center is located in Klamath Falls Oregon. Klamath Falls is a very rural and isolated area with a high poverty rate. Our non-profit theater is comprised of more than 7 youth-focused educational programs and has a profound impact on the community and those we serve. Our young audience matinees are a fieldtrip destination for our local and surrounding school systems. We bring educational acts and entertainers so that the schools and children have access to arts and culture. In 2012, funding was cut from the schools for arts, music and cultural education. The Ross Ragland Theater stepped in to fill that role and we have been doing so ever since. We serve more than 10,000 students ages k-12 every season and many of them return multiple times throughout the season. We also take the artists into the schools to teach workshops and work personally with the children. This project will run from October of 2024 through September of 2025.

Project Title: Youth Leadership Advisory Board Program
Project Description:

We are requesting funding to support and continue the work we are doing with our Youth Leadership Advisory Board Program (YLAB). There is a tremendous opportunity to engage young people through service-learning and community-based programming like the YLAB Program. Young people need to have a sense of belonging and a sense of purpose. Education ought to be student-centered, authentic, engaging, incorporating multiple intelligences, motivating, generating self-esteem, and intrinsic motivation. The current policy driving our system of education does not allow for this form of learning. By working with teachers, parents, business leaders and the community, we have an opportunity to strengthen relationships between youth and adults and connect them to their communities. We also have a unique opportunity to ensure youth decision-making within the organization by having them identify and define issues, share their concerns, and develop plans and strategies that would benefit the community-at-large, especially by promoting racial harmony and cross-cultural understanding through diversity, equity, and inclusivity.

Today’s Date: 12/1/2023
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: STEM program
Project Description:

The Diaspora Global Foundation’s STEM program is a multifaceted initiative dedicated to transforming the educational experiences of underserved children in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). At the core of this program are Summer STEM Camps that immerse participants in a dynamic learning environment, blending hands-on experiments, projects, and team activities to spark creativity and hone problem-solving skills. Complementing this, LEGO Robotics Events provide a tangible avenue for children to engage with robotics principles, programming, and teamwork, often culminating in friendly competitions that foster collaboration.

Recognizing the need for a holistic approach, the foundation extends its reach into formal education systems through in-school and after-school STEM programs. These initiatives not only supplement the standard curriculum with additional resources but also offer mentorship and practical applications of STEM concepts. Weekend Leadership Initiatives go beyond the traditional STEM scope, focusing on instilling leadership qualities, teamwork, and character development, contributing to the well-rounded growth of participants.

Understanding the pivotal role of parental involvement, the foundation produces educational podcasts, serving as a valuable resource for parents and stakeholders navigating the challenges of their children’s educational journeys. Additionally, the program actively supports and establishes new First LEGO League (FLL) Robotics Teams in specific areas, providing students with opportunities to delve deeper into robotics, participate in competitions, and apply their STEM knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Through a combination of hands-on experiences, mentorship, and community engagement, the Diaspora Global Foundation’s STEM program aspires to bridge educational gaps, instill a passion for learning, and equip underserved children with the skills and mindset needed for leadership roles in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Project Title: Sankofa Young Women’s Leadership Project
Project Description:

As an arts and culture organization, CCCADI produces, on a monthly basis, significant performances, collaborations, convenings, symposia, curated exhibits and other programs that speak to the resiliency, courage and strength of African descendent people who, despite slavery, colonialism and racial oppression, have been able to preserve and strengthen our heritage that not only bonds all African descendants together but binds them as well to ancestral origins in Africa.

As an organization dedicated to racial and social justice and cultural equity, CCCADI continues to serve as the leading spokesperson regarding the steps that must be taken by the arts and culture community (funders and grantees alike) in order to honestly and forthrightly address systemic racism within arts and culture, and within the community as a whole. When the COVID pandemic struck, many arts and culture organizations throughout New York City closed down. CCCADI did not. When George Floyd was murdered, arts and culture organizations issued written platitudes of support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

CCCADI created the Sankofa Young Women’s Leadership Development Project in 2022 for young women of color (ages 14-18) who by virtue of desire, capacity or both wish to learn how arts and culture serves as healing balm on social justice issues troubling our society and wish to learn the leadership role that they can play in preserving African culture.

In the African Diaspora (to some extent, in other cultures as well), women have always served as the "culture bearers" responsible for preserving the customs, beliefs, language, music, dances, rituals, food, recipes and the list goes on. Yet, through centuries of cultural oppression and suppression, young women of color have not been "trained" in the old ways and the absence of that knowledge and training shows up in "rudder-less" behavior during critical formative years of adolescent development.

Project Title: Enhancing Youth Development and Welfare Through Nutrition Programs
Project Description:

In response to the pressing need to fortify youth development and welfare, DMF Group presents "NourishWell”, an ambitious project aimed at elevating the well-being of at-risk youth in the Houston area through a comprehensive nutrition program.

NourishWell is designed to address the nutritional needs of youth aged 5-18, emphasizing the critical link between proper nutrition and holistic development. In collaboration with local partners, including schools and community organizations, DMF Group seeks to expand and enhance its existing meal program to ensure that every child has access to nutritious and balanced meals.

1. Nutritional Excellence: We are committed to providing more than just meals. NourishWell focuses on delivering nutritionally rich and culturally sensitive food, meeting the Texas Department of Agriculture standards. Our goal is to foster healthy eating habits and address food insecurity among at-risk youth.

2. Holistic Development: Beyond physical health, NourishWell recognizes the integral role nutrition plays in cognitive development and emotional well-being. We aim to create an environment where youth can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

3. Community Collaboration: NourishWell is not a standalone initiative; it’s a community-driven effort. We actively seek partnerships with local businesses, schools, and organizations to create a network that supports the sustainable growth of the program.

NourishWell’s impact extends beyond the nutritional realm. By addressing food insecurity, we aim to reduce barriers to education, enhance community engagement, and contribute to the overall resilience of at-risk youth. We anticipate improved academic performance, enhanced emotional well-being, and a reduction in health-related issues among our program participants.

NourishWell’s sustainability lies in its community-centric approach. We envision a future where local businesses, educational institutions, and the broader community actively contribute to and benefit from the program. By fostering a sense of shared responsibility, we aim to create lasting change and a healthier, more vibrant community.
