Project Title: CHD’s Court-Appointed Special Advocates
Project Description:

Since 1989, the Center of Human Development’s (CHD) Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) have been speaking up for kids who can’t. CASA recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers who are then appointed by juvenile court judges to serve as guardian’s ad litem and advocate for abused and neglected children. “CASAs” represent the best interests of children in the courtroom and in the community. CASA is an innovative, community-driven, and scalable solution to one of our state’s most pervasive challenges.
Many children in foster care have experienced trauma and instability, putting them at risk for increased rates of mental health disorders, substance use disorders, and educational discrepancies. It is often difficult for youth in foster care to find and maintain support networks to help them succeed. Connections are compromised as they grow due to lack of natural family supports and frequent transitions. It is not uncommon for children to experience multiple changes in placement homes, school systems, social workers, attorneys and providers while in care.

Children in the system who have been appointed a CASA have significantly fewer foster care placements, perform better in school, and report having a greater sense of hopefulness. They’re also half as likely to re-enter the foster care system after exiting and more likely to be adopted if they do not return to their birth family. Youth who have had CASA’s report that a CASA volunteer’s presence and consistency increases their confidence and ability to connect. All of these outcomes translate to increased resilience, reduced engagement in risky and adverse behaviors and increased well-being later in life.

The goal of the CASA Program is to assist the court in expediting permanency for children through reunification, adoption and legal guardianship. CHD requests support for this program to increase our outreach to vulnerable populations.

Project Title: GRIL U Teen Leadership Program
Project Description:

Grand Rapids Initiative for Leaders teen leadership program, GRIL U, guides young leaders aged 15-21 to define their personal mission statements, set goals, and find specific ways to influence their community.

Our programs meet after school at various locations throughout the community and GRIL provides transportation, program literature, and snacks. We limit the group size to ensure each student receives adequate focus and attention to foster their development. Our program encourages students to find opportunities to lead at church, school, or a business.

One participant, a refugee from a war-torn country, was surprised to discover how little her new friends and community knew about her home country. Through the program at GRIL, she decided to share her story through a short movie to share with new friends to help them learn about the situation she had left behind. She is now attending college and writing a book about her refugee experience. Through the mentorship at the GRIL-U program, she was able to answer the question: how can I make a difference in my community?

Without these programs offered at GRIL, our community would miss out on caring, resourceful, intelligent leaders who would not have access to character training like this. It’s imperative that a community has leaders from multiple backgrounds to step up and bring necessary changes to our neighborhoods.

A grant of $8,000 from Hermanowski Family Foundation go towards funding one site for our GRIL U program. Our program runs 9 months from September to May each year. The total cost to run one site with 12 participants is $25,000 which includes scholarships to students. We believe our GRIL U program aligns with the Foundation’s commitment to transform the lives of children through education

Project Title: College Bound
Project Description:

Most of the students we reach through our flagship program, College Bound are at-risk, low-income, English-Language Learners. Approximately 91% of College Bound students are Hispanic/Latinx, 93% are low-income according to HUD income guidelines and 89% are first-generation college students.

Through College Bound, we facilitate students’ successful transition from high school, into college and, finally, into a career through intensive case management, educational enrichment, family counseling and financial assistance. College Bound serves 2,500 students through its hybrid model across Orange and Los Angeles County annually. Unlike other education programs, College Bound meets youth where they are and accepts all students into the program. We do not limit based on gross domestic product or grade point averages. College Bound is a commitment based on the effort of the student. Academic Advisors (Advisors) are the heart of College Bound. Advisors track students’ high school graduation requirements to ensure they have university and state university prerequisites. Additionally, Advisors help secure financial resources by matching students to scholarship and grant opportunities and provide application assistance with FAFSA, scholarships and grants. To ensure youth are fully supported at home, Advisors counsel parents/ caregivers about the process and costs associated with college, the value of earning a degree and how to best support their child. For first-generation college students whose families are often unfamiliar with college processes, the resources and services College Bound offers demystify the college application process and make attending college an attainable goal.

To ensure access for all, the Club is committed to keeping membership fees, which provide access to College Bound, to $1 per month, or free if families are unable to pay. There are no other organizations in the region that provide the level of case management that College Bound provides to students and families at this low cost.

Project Title: Temporary Housing and Meals of Love
Project Description:

The mission of the Inland Empire Ronald McDonald House (IERMH) is to provide comfort, care, and support to children and families. Our objective is to provide temporary housing for up to 54 families nightly 365 days a year; providing a private guest room with shared common spaces; provide every family with the
opportunity to meet with our Family Support Services (FSS) team for emotional support; provide families the resources needed to navigate through the challenges they face and assist them with making community
support connections. One main program goal is to keep families close to their children during medical
treatment.
Some families must maintain two households with one parent staying with the child receiving treatment while the other parent remains at home to continue working and caring for other children, often a considerable distance apart. Expenses for medical, transportation, parking and other unknowns are incurred and can be financially devastating for a family causing a tremendous strain. The Inland Empire Ronald McDonald House “Meals of Love” program has been very successful, and we plan to keep providing meals for families when there is not a meal planned by a restaurant or a volunteer group during the week.
