Project Title: School Program: Hygiene Supplies for Health & Dignity
Project Description:

Giving the Basics’ School Hygiene Program distributes free personal hygiene supplies to low-income Kansas City area students. We launched the program in 2014 in response to calls from school staff who told us that many of their students had no way to wash their clothes or hair and were going without daily items like toothpaste and soap. These young people were being ostracized and often bullied, leading to chronic absenteeism.

Our School Hygiene Program currently partners with 401 public, charter, and parochial schools in the Kansas City metro area providing access to over 180,000 students. Supplies provided include, among others: shampoo, deodorant, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, period products and home cleaning supplies such as detergent. In 2022, we expanded this program through a Rural School Program, shipping hygiene supplies to 19 schools outside the Kansas City area. No other agency in our region provides a similar service.

How the School Program works:
• School register for the program on our website and are added to wait list.
• Schools join the program once funds are available for the first year of service.
• Schools receive an online account through which they submit monthly orders.
• Each school is assigned a monthly pick-up day.
• Volunteers and staff complete each order and assist with pick-up.
• At each school, supplies are stocked in the nurse’s office.
• Students are free to choose the products they need any time during school hours.
• Schools and pantries submit monthly reports and letters of impact.

Outcomes
• Students experience improved health and establish life-long healthy habits.
• Improved attendance and participation in school activities.
• Improved quality of life, increased acceptance by peers, decrease in bullying.

Funding from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will assist in meeting the needs of the 420 schools currently served and help us to add additional schools from our wait list. At this time, 60 schools are waiting to join the program.

Project Title: Ivywood Classical Academy Expansion: Building a Brighter Future
Project Description:

Ivywood Classical Academy is embarking on a new project to expand our facility. Our first phase of the project will be to construct a new building for grades 9-12, located just two miles from our current campus. This building will cost an estimated $16M, and will provide the necessary space to accommodate our growing student population.

Once completed, the new facility will include classrooms, a gymnasium, offices, and other educational spaces. The building will be designed to provide a safe and secure learning environment, while also providing students and faculty with the most up-to-date educational technology and resources.

The project will be completed in phases, beginning with the construction of the new building. The second phase will involve the relocation of the current 9-12 student population to the new facility. Once the building is completed and the students are settled, Ivywood will continue to invest in the necessary technologies, updates, and renovations to ensure the building remains up-to-date.

The new building will provide Ivywood with the opportunity to deliver an even better educational experience to our students. We are committed to providing a safe, secure and comfortable learning environment, and the new facility will be the cornerstone of our continuing mission to inspire wonder and equip scholars to become moral and intellectual leaders in a self-governing society.

Here is feedback from a parent that had a child participate in a sensory performance event offered at The Broward Center for the arts: "The Sensory-Inclusive performance was amazing!! Thank you again for having these events. You have changed our lives and helped us feel supported and accepted. This was my first event, and I am so happy we were able to come. My son enjoyed it so much and it was so wonderful not having to tell him to be quiet or to stop running or dancing or standing up or anything. He could be his authentic self and have the time of his life. I’m forever grateful."

Project Title: Study on Full (SOF)
Project Description:

G.O.O.D. (Growth Over Odds & Doubts) Kids Inc. is a non-profit organization that mentor youth through education, sports and creative arts. G.O.O.D. Kids believe that sports and fitness are essential in eliminating childhood disease such as asthma, cardiovascular disease and obesity; we also believe that creative arts are essential to unlocking the creativity in our youth and building confidence. G.O.O.D. Kids also provide services for youth that has difficulty at home, school or in social settings because of emotional or behavioral problems. G.O.O.D. Kids has a heavy emphasis on educational services and we reach majority of our participants through our afterschool programs. We want all children to grow to their full potential.

G.O.O.D Kids’ after school program, Study on Full (SOF) is a successful after school program that has been in operation since 2006. The program operates Monday through Friday from 3PM to 7PM and follows the Richland County Public School calendar. The program provides nutritious meals to all participants. G.O.O.D Kid’s has used data from Feeding America to identify that in 2017 16.2% of the population in Richland County was food insecure. The pandemic has further exasperated that situation. G.O.O.D. Kids wants to ensure that all students are taken care of when they walk through our doors. We provide all students with a nutritious supper and snack when they first arrive. During that time students are invited to reflect upon their day. Staff are trained to ensure that students are engaged and notice any changes from day to day. After receiving a snack participants will go to their designated area and complete their homework assignments and tutorials. Additionally, students will spend time engaged in a wide range of other activities such as mentorships and working on civic engagement projects, all at no cost to their families and facilities.

Project Title: “Carol of the Birds” in Winter 2023 & “Birdsong” in Spring 2024
Project Description:

Girl Choir’s self-produced performances during its 19th season— “Carol of the Birds” in Winter 2023 & “Birdsong” in Spring 2024—will explore the sounds of the original music makers in nature and their roles in carols, poetry, history, and literature.

Under the direction of our renowned artistic staff, GCSF performs 4 major annual concerts in addition to free community benefits and contracted performances. In the 2023-2024 season, GCSF will present "Carol of the Birds" and "Birdsong."
These two thoughtful programs will feature the uniquely compelling harmony of young women’s voices celebrating the first musicians in nature and their roles in poetry and literature. Selections in the two programs include titles like the traditional Catalan Christmas lullaby "El cant dels ocells," "Cuckoo" from Benjamin Britten’s Friday Afternoons, and Susan LaBarr’s setting of Emily Dickenson’s poem "Hope is the Thing with Feathers."

Rehearsals for all ensembles began in August 2023 and continue weekly through December 2023, resuming again in January 2024 through May 2024. In addition to weekly rehearsals, choristers participate in music theory lessons and choreography workshops.

Mainstage performance programs are presented each season in December and May. Each program typically involves 2 performances – one featuring all ensembles at a large venue and another more intimate and artistically nuanced performance featuring our most advanced ensembles.

The "Carol of the Birds" winter concert program will be performed in December 2023 and the spring "Birdsong" program in May 2024, with actual dates to be determined pending venue availability and organization scheduling considerations.

Throughout the season (July 2023-June 2024), the choir will continue to perform at local community events as well as in contracted performances.

Project Title: Next Youth Leaders
Project Description:

Next Youth provides different programming to youth in the New York area. Our most popular are Bridging the Gap and Lightning Academy.

Bridging the Gap is an open forum between youth and police officers to discuss current issues and events plaguing the community. In the wake of recent events have sparked nationwide protests. The already strained relationship between law enforcement and the black community has resurfaced. Trust has been lost. Lives have been lost, leaving the urban community extremely frustrated and reaching its boiling point. The results were rebellions throughout most major cities across the country. It’s vital for police agencies to make improving relationships with their local community a top priority.

Next Youth Leader has partnered with the New York Police Department (NYPD) to bring a multiple session program to youth to discuss issue plaguing our communities. These discussions have led to meaningful conversation and information given to our youth.

Lightning Academy is a program for middle and high school students who do not have access to tutors or extra help outside the classroom. Lightning Academy currently serves 150 youth in a variety of subject including math, science, English and history.
