Project Title: Partnership with Miami-Dade public library
Project Description:

Play it Forward is a non-profit whose goal is to partner with community organizations (specifically the public libraries in South Florida) to establish toy libraries in locations easily accessible to families with young children, with toys available to rent for free. Inventory will include specific adaptive toys for children with various physical, cognitive, developmental, and social-emotional delays, and inclusive toys to provide diverse representation and expose all children to diverse abilities, cultures, races, languages, etc. Our mission is to increase equity for early developmental play experiences by increasing child access to high-quality, developmentally appropriate toys, and to decrease toy-related waste by sharing toys instead. Our goals for this project specifically include purchasing adaptive toys for children with disabilities to include in the library catalog, support for the public library to include them in the catalog (e.g., taking pictures, listing them in the format of the catalog), storage solutions for the toys (e.g., durable, washable bags for storing and checking out toys from the library), and solutions for cleaning the toys once they are returned (e.g., dishwasher, sink, non-toxic cleaning solutions).

Project Title: Art is Good Medicine
Project Description:

Art is Good Medicine serves more than 500 cancer patients and their caregivers through our partnerships with ECU Health and the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge. Our service is blind—we knock on the doors of the hospitalized and invite them to engage in a 30 or 60-minute art activity that is designed to minimize stress, anxiety, create distractions from the symptoms of treatment, and otherwise promote healing.

We deliver Art is Good Medicine at two locations. ECU Health (formerly Vidant Health) is the largest and most comprehensive facility of its kind in the rural, eastern portion of our state, serving 29 counties. We work specifically in the oncology, palliative and pediatric departments. The American Cancer Society McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge is a free “home-away-from-home” for advanced cancer patients and caregivers, supporting individuals who live greater than 40 miles away from treatment.

Cancer doesn’t discriminate. Accordingly, we serve everyone we encounter who is interested and able to engage with us. We offer service to children as young as eight years of age. Because of our partnership with the Hope Lodge, our service pool skews toward older, lower socioeconomic status patients. That said, we begin each week’s service at the Maynard Children’s Hospital, serving youth first.

This program is free to participants.

Total Project Budget: $22,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Foundation ($3,000), Dick Blick ($100), Phillip Van Every Foundation ($2,500). Uncounted: Tip jar from First Friday Art Walks. Pending: membership appeal.

Project Duration: Ongoing.
Geographical Area Served: Services provided in Pitt County, North Carolina; however, the regional hospital serves a 29-county region, ergo, we serve these residents as well.
Age Group To Be Served: We serve all ages. We begin our service week in pediatrics and serve all youth before moving to oncology and palliative care in our hospital. On Saturdays we are in residence at the Hope Lodge.

Project Title: Upower Trauma-Informed Coaching
Project Description:

Upower builds positive relationships through trauma-informed coaching using movement and play to empower and educate youth who are underserved. Our vision is to confront systemic and institutional inequalities adversely affecting underserved youth by providing access to the physical, social-emotional, and academic benefits of physical activity and play.

Upower works with underserved youth by partnering and collaborating with schools, detention centers, addiction recovery centers, migrant youth serving organizations, and affordable housing communities. These schools are under-resourced schools and do not have funds to provide physical education for their students which has been proven to be an essential component in youth character development. With the lack of funding and adequate care inside these schools, there is an increased risk of student disengagement, poor attendance, and dropout rates. (American Psychological Association, 2013).

Upower is requesting funding investments from the Hermanowski Family Foundationworks to continue trauma-informed coaching in under-resourced schools. Upower works to fill the educational gaps forced by the meso- and micro- level of a youth’s life. Upower takes a trauma-sensitive approach to promote youth development through movement, play and relationship building, teaching students important life skills such as emotion regulation, future planning, and positive identity formation.
