Project Title: Children’s Emergency Foster Shelter
Project Description:

Grandma’s Place operates an emergency foster shelter program for children who have been victims of abuse or neglect, operating 24 hours/7 days a week, 365 days per year in a loving and nurturing homelike environment. The program provides much needed care with on-site therapies provided by independent contractors in the following disciplines: speech, physical, occupational, psychological counseling and other therapies as needed. The shelter has a capacity of 16 children per night and is licensed for children age birth -12. It is the ONLY emergency residential shelter in Palm Beach County for both boys and girls ages birth through 12, which is vital as the majority of abuse victims are younger than 6.

Children remain at the shelter for periods from one day to over a year, until it is safe for them to live with relatives, or a loving adoptive or foster home is found for them. We provide each child with a Case Plan that addresses their physical, emotional, social, and educational needs for the duration of their stay. A quarterly meal plan is developed by a registered dietician staff to ensure proper nutrition. School-aged children attend local public schools, and our staff coordinates with the school to assure that each child’s educational needs are being met.

Art lessons and music therapy sessions are held weekly as a comprehensive and effective tool to reduce feelings of loss, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and helplessness that are often associated with abuse and homelessness; and promote self-expression, interpersonal communication, and scholastic excellence. Children have tremendous resiliency; many children who have suffered abuse or abandonment become successful, healthy adults with relatively few problems, if they are removed from the negative environment. The more protective factors and resources that are available, the more likely these children will overcome adversities and obtain positive outcomes.

Project Description:

Pepin Academies is a not-for-profit, charter school serving students with learning disabilities. Pepin Academies’ mission is to empower students with learning disabilities to maximize their potential in a positive therapeutic educational environment. Our students represent a broad range of cognitive levels as well as diverse, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. Our students can attain the highest of academic standards, if given a chance to demonstrate their knowledge in an appropriate setting.
Pepin Academies focuses on classes and opportunities that will provide possible career paths for our students. The CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) Pepin Riverview Project focuses on presentation of complex STEM based curricula through hands-on, kinetic learning. Forensics is the application of science to law. The students will learn to identify, gather, and process evidence from a crime scene. The goal is to move from the crime scene to the courtroom. Many of our students struggle with both math and science. The field of Forensics provides an opportunity to apply both math and science skills such as geometry (measuring the angle of impact for blood spatter or projectiles, measuring bones to estimate height of a person, etc.) and physics ( analysis of microscopic evidence as well as chemical analysis.) Art is additionally combined with the STEM activities (STEAM) in an activity that involves facial reconstruction on skulls using clay to determine a person’s features. The community will be engaged through We hope to engage the community through a field trip to the Crime Scene House at St. Leo University in St. Leo, Florida. In addition, there will be invited speakers such as Dr. Sue Gruner, a Forensic Entomologist who specializes in studying insect development to determine time of death as well as local law enforcement officers to discuss criminal investigations and procedures.

Project Title: Helping Hands Program
Project Description:

Our Helping Hands program provides literacy/math remediation (350 students), case management (250 students), wrap-around support (150 students), books for students and foster children (1700 children), health screenings (4000 students), life skills training (150 students), and whole school engagement activities when COVID-19 restrictions allow (4000 students).
Helping Hands aligns with the Coordinated Community Services Priority from the Governor’s Office of Student Affairs in Georgia to work with chronically-failing schools in the Augusta area. Our model of support is founded on community collaboration with businesses, social service agencies, churches, and healthcare providers for wrap-around support.

Working alongside school staff, RISE site coordinators identify struggling students in danger of failing or dropping out, assess their needs, and provide integrated support services utilizing appropriate community partnerships. Based on site coordinator and teacher assessments, RISE academic remediation tutors placed in the school provide intensive intervention with failing and/or at-risk students. Remediation tutoring in small group and individual settings is necessary to bring struggling students back to their grade level. Students are taken out of the classroom during school hours to meet with their tutor two to three times a week for hour-long sessions. Proven methods are used to find the source of student difficulties and bring them up to grade level in Math and Reading during remediation time. Tutors also serve as mentors as they build relationships with individual students through the school year. The site coordinator will also distribute wrap-around support as identified by tutors and teachers to mitigate nonacademic barriers to learning.

This grant can provide much-needed support that will allow us to move forward with our mission and continue impacting our at-risk students: $5,000 will go toward tutoring remediation costs; $2,500 will provide wrap-around services to vulnerable students.

Project Title: Empowering Youth to Lead and Succeed
Project Description:

Consider these two situations: first, you are the young person identified by adults as a leader. Opportunities come knocking at your door, but not with the preparation to help you be successful. Then there are many youth who want to lead but who never get connected to the opportunities that exist.
The absence of youth in decision-making roles fails to provide them with critical opportunities as they are developing other life skills, to develop one the most important skills that is required for success: HOW TO BE A LEADER.

MCCOY will prepare youth to serve as leaders on boards of directors, on community planning task forces, on neighborhood associations, and in other places where the involvement of youth would be both critical and helpful. We will also place these trained and committed youth into the roles that they are best suited for and that match their passions and interests. To prepare, we will offer learning sessions to help youth develop the necessary skills for civic involvement, including but not limited to oral and written communication and effective listening; problem-solving; critical analysis; planning and implementation; roles of nonprofit boards; teamwork and collaboration. These sessions will be offered both in person and virtually and in a variety of learning styles to reach a diverse audience of youth. Learning in a group will allow teens to practice these skills in a safe atmosphere and develop a network of leaders like themselves that they will be able to lean on for support in the future.

At the end of the learning process, we will help each young person develop a profile of their skills and interests to share with organizations that are seeking youth to be involved, organizations that MCCOY staff have recruited and prepared to properly support these emerging leaders.

Project Title: Stay KidSafe!
Project Description:

KidSafe has developed practical ways to strengthen families and protect children from falling victim to sexual abuse and trafficking. Our proven Stay KidSafe! program empowers children to stay safe from abuse through its in-school discussions of technology, body boundaries, trusted adults, and the importance of valuing and respecting oneself. In line with Florida’s mandate for child abuse/child-trafficking prevention education for students Grades K-12, KidSafe has created a new 3-D animation platform, supported by the Florida Department of Education, to ensure the accessibility and ease of delivery for its proven messaging which has educated 60,000 Florida children and 30,000 child-serving adults since 2009.
A grant of $7,500 will assist KidSafe Foundation in bringing its program into a minimum of twelve Palm Beach County Schools that are already engaged through our programming staff and ready to begin the Stay KidSafe! program in K – 5th grades in the fall of the 2022-2023 academic year touching a minimum of 12,000 PBC students. Our programming staff will interface with classroom teachers to ensure that they are using the programs’ accompanying lesson plans and teacher guidance materials appropriately. Teachers and guidance counselors will be personally encouraged by our program staff and will receive guidance in providing the program to students . To further encourage teachers, we will offer incentives that will motivate their interest and involvement in the program.
As part of our in-person guidance, we will highlight the accompanying books that we are giving to each classroom in grades K-2, showing teachers how the books can reinforce their teaching of Stay KidSafe! concepts in the classroom. Teachers and guidance counselors may benefit from reviewing the parent guidebook materials themselves to strengthen their understanding of the program concepts and may also share the guidebooks with parents, offering to lend them as they see fit.
