Project Title: Promising Men’s Mentoring Program
Project Description:

The Promising Men’s Mentoring Program helps young men in grades 5-8 increase their educational skills, social skills, and leadership skills. We work with Youngstown Community School and Youngstown City School District to provide weekly mentoring sessions, social outings, and visits to area businesses. We believe children will function based on what they have been shown, taught, and have experienced.

The Kool Boiz Foundation’s Promising Men Mentoring Program is designed to change the mindsets and behaviors of the young men we serve and help them achieve success in all aspects of their lives. Research shows that youth who have high levels of developmental assistance achieve more and are involved in fewer high-risk behaviors. According to the National Cares Mentoring Movement, when young people are mentored well, 98% stay in school; 98% do not become teen parents; 85% do not use drugs; and 98% avoid gang participation. The goal of our mentoring program is to provide young men with sound advice, strong support, and new societal experiences that will create a vision of “What’s Possible” for their lives.

We believe there is hope for every child having a difficult time functioning in school and in society. With this belief, we strive to do the following to make the difference:
• Provide them with support.
• Expose them to a different way.
• Establish expectations.
• Hold them accountable.
• Provide encouragement.
• Reward them when they do well.

Project Title: Girls Who Grieve: Healing Through Connection
Project Description:

Girls Who Grieve is a structured emotional wellness program serving girls ages 8-17 who are navigating father absence due to death, incarceration, divorce, or emotional estrangement. Many of the girls we serve experience unresolved grief that impacts their confidence, academic engagement, and emotional regulation. Yet preventative, relationship-centered programming for girls coping with father loss remains scarce.

The program provides a 6-week healing cohort model that combines guided journaling, facilitated discussion circles, creative expression (art and movement), and mentorship. Each cohort is led by trained facilitators and supported by community volunteers who model healthy adult relationships. Girls learn tools for emotional processing, communication, identity development, and resilience.

Hermanowski Foundation funding would directly support two 6-week cohorts serving 60 girls annually, including curriculum materials, journals, facilitator stipends, space rental, evaluation tools, and scholarships for low- to moderate-income participants.

Measurable outcomes include:
Increased emotional literacy and coping skills
Improved self-reported confidence and sense of belonging
Strengthened communication within the home
At the Him & Me Foundation, we believe every girl deserves to feel protected, loved, and worthy — through the power of presence. Girls Who Grieve moves beyond one-day inspiration to sustained healing support. By addressing grief early, we reduce long-term mental health risks and strengthen the relational stability of the home.

This project is preventative youth mental health intervention rooted in connection, dignity, and long-term impact.

Total Project Budget: 22,500

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Committed: Individual donor contributions (annual giving campaign) Program registration fees (sliding scale model) Board member contributions In-kind space support from community partners Potential: Corporate sponsorships aligned with youth mental health initiatives Local family foundations supporting girls’ wellness Community fundraising events Additional small private foundation grants The Hermanowski Foundation request will represent a defined portion of the overall program cost and will directly underwrite two 6-week cohorts serving 60 girls.

Project Duration: January 2027 – December 2027 Two 6-week cohorts will run within the grant year, with planning, recruitment, evaluation, and reporting completed within the same funding cycle to align with the Foundation’s one-year funding requirement.
Geographical Area Served: Northeast Ohio, with primary service in the Greater Cleveland area.
Age Group To Be Served: Girls ages 8-17 This project specifically focuses on youth navigating father absence and relational grief during critical developmental years.

Project Title: Diapers are a Basic Emergency Need
Project Description:

Diapers are as necessary to a baby’s healthy development as a mother’s love. Keeping infants and toddlers clean, dry, and healthy is key to building a solid foundation for all children to reach their full potential. According to the National Diaper Bank Network, one in three families struggles to provide clean diapers for their baby. Not being able to change diapers regularly create rashes, sores (equivalent to second- and third-degree burns), and infections which can lead to hospitalizations. Children in low-income families are at greatest risk of suffering the effects of diaper need because many families can’t afford diapers. Early Head Start provides child and family development services for infants, toddlers, and pregnant women(Chester, Lancaster, and York County does not have an Early Head Start Program). Center-based EHS programs provide diapers for infants and toddlers. Other federally funded childcare assistance programs don’t. For families enrolled in the latter, not having access to diapers removes a key building block for strong families. Without diapers a parent cannot go to work, and not working disqualifies a parent from vital child care resources.

Project Title: QUEEN ME!
Project Description:

Queen Me! – Reigning in Godfidence is the launch of a generational empowerment movement serving 50 Black girls in Lovejoy, Georgia, including 10 navigating chronic health conditions through our specialized Endurance Circle.
This initiative is deeply rooted in lived experience. Our founder, Joi, was chronically ill and bedridden for more than two years as a child. She spent three weeks out of every month hospitalized and was discharged only briefly to travel from Virginia to Maryland for treatment at the Children’s Hospital because local physicians could not determine how to treat her condition. Beyond the physical challenges, the most lasting impact was isolation — watching life continue while fighting to simply survive.
Queen Me! was created to ensure that girls facing similar challenges are met with community instead of invisibility.
Queen Me! was created to ensure that girls facing similar challenges are met with community instead of invisibility.
The Reigning in Godfidence Day Soiree serves as the ignition point of a structured empowerment ecosystem centered on identity, resilience, faith-rooted confidence, mental wellness, and long-term leadership development. Participants will engage in guided workshops, creative expression, peer support circles, and licensed mental health engagement. Each girl will receive curated resources and access to continued mentorship pathways.

Project Title: Rural Youth Rising: Building Confidence, Leadership, and Mental Wellness
Project Description:

This project expands access to structured AAU travel basketball programming that combines athletic development with mentorship, leadership training, and positive youth engagement for participants from underserved communities. Many of the young people we serve face financial barriers, limited access to safe extracurricular activities, and a lack of consistent mentorship opportunities. Our program addresses these challenges by providing a supportive, team-centered environment where youth develop confidence, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility both on and off the court.

Through organized practices, competitive tournaments, and mentorship-focused coaching, participants build technical basketball skills while strengthening communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities. The program intentionally emphasizes character development and academic accountability, encouraging athletes to apply lessons learned through sport to their daily lives, schools, and communities. By removing participation barriers such as travel costs, equipment needs, and facility access, we ensure that youth who might otherwise be excluded can fully participate and benefit from a positive, structured environment.

Funding will support essential program components including tournament registration, transportation, uniforms, training space, and leadership development activities. The anticipated outcomes include increased youth participation, high retention rates, measurable skill progression, and improved confidence and community engagement among participants.

Ultimately, this project seeks to create lasting impact by equipping young people with the tools needed to become resilient, community-minded leaders. Success will be evaluated through participant retention, development benchmarks, and feedback from families and community partners, ensuring the program continues to deliver meaningful, measurable outcomes aligned with the Hermanowski Foundation’s commitment to strengthening youth and communities.

Project Title: NED Summer Lunch Program
Project Description:

New Era Detroit’s Lunch Program is a seasonal initiative ensuring all youth 18 and under has access to free, nutritious meals during summer months. From June to September, our organization will serve lunch for the duration of 3 hours Monday through Friday at our headquarters. This program intentionally fills the gap left when school-year meal services pause, addressing the heightened risk of food insecurity outside of school hours.

In 2025 alone, the Lunch Program served hundreds of youth, meeting a critical community need. Beyond providing balanced meals that support physical, the program creates a safe and welcoming environment where young people can gather, build relationships, and feel supported. Consistent access to food reduces the stress and instability many families face, allowing students to move out of survival mode. When basic needs are met, youth experience greater mental and emotional stability, positioning them to focus, grow, and thrive.

The lunch program also serves as a gateway to long-term opportunity. While onsite, students and families are connected to essential resources including career readiness initiatives, emergency assistance, child-care/after school programs, and mental health support. Participants are introduces to summer youth business programs that assists them into exploring skilled trades applicable across multiple industries.

By integrating nourishment with resource awareness and workforce development, NECC addresses immediate hunger while equipping youth with tools for building pathways toward economic stability and long term community impact. $10,000 in grant funding would cover essential meal services supplies such as fresh produce & proteins, food storage material, and utensils to ensure balanced healthy meals. Additionally the grant would help provide outreach materials and printed resource guides.

Project Title: Empowering Young Minds
Project Description:

Empowering Young Minds is a holistic academic and social-emotional learning initiative serving K–12 students across Fredericksburg and the surrounding Planning District 16 region. The program provides targeted math and English tutoring combined with innovative enrichment experiences, including Dungeons & Dragons–based role-play learning and structured after-school support.

Many of the students we serve face barriers due to poverty, disability, language challenges, and post-pandemic academic setbacks. Empowering Young Minds addresses these disparities through individualized tutoring (1–3 sessions weekly), small-group academic support, and enrichment programming that builds executive functioning, confidence, and resilience.

One of our students, Adriana, began tutoring with us struggling in reading comprehension and lacking confidence in her academic abilities. With consistent one-on-one support and encouragement, she began improving her grades and participating more actively in class. Her mother later shared that Adriana now reads independently at home and approaches challenges with a new sense of determination. Through financial assistance made possible by community donors, Adriana’s family was able to access services they otherwise could not afford. Today, she participates in both tutoring and enrichment programming—thriving academically and socially.

Through structured storytelling and collaborative gameplay, students strengthen literacy, problem-solving, emotional regulation, and teamwork skills. At least 75% of participants complete a written creative project demonstrating literacy growth, and 85% identify and apply self-management strategies through gameplay and mentorship.

The program currently serves approximately 35 students annually, many from low- to middle-income families. Funding will support tutor compensation, instructional materials, enrichment supplies, and program sustainability—ensuring more students like Adriana gain the confidence and tools to succeed.
