Project Title: Fenway Connected
Project Description:

The Fenway Connected initiative is a joint venture between Operation P.E.A.C.E. and the Fenway Community Center designed to elevate education access, strengthen family well-being, and deepen community cohesion for the Fenway neighborhood. This project serves as a strategic platform to deliver high-quality afterschool enrichment, early childhood programming, ESL support, wraparound services, and a comprehensive community needs assessment that informs long-term service delivery.

Anchored in a shared commitment to equity, safety, and opportunity, the initiative deploys dedicated Fenway Community Center staffing supported by Operation P.E.A.C.E. to deliver 35 hours per week of structured, community-driven programming. Children access literacy, STEM, creativity, homework help, and social-emotional learning activities that build confidence and strengthen academic outcomes. Young families engage in weekly playgroup featuring arts, sensory learning, and developmental support. Adults benefit from accessible ESL sessions and conversation groups that enhance communication skills, digital literacy, and neighborhood navigation. Seniors and multigenerational households are connected through culturally responsive seasonal events, celebrations, and responsive supports such as new-parent kids or milestone gatherings.

A core pillar of the project is an exploratory needs-based assessment that surveys, interviews, and engages residents to understand priorities, identify services gaps, and build a data-driven roadmap for future programming. The intentional listening strategy positions the initiative as a scalable model for community development and operational excellence. By delivering consistent engagement, building trust, and expanding access to enrichment opportunities, the Fenway Connected Initiative strengthens resident belonging and creates a vibrant hub where children learn, families grow, and neighbors thrive. This project not only responds to immediate community needs but also establishes a sustainable foundation for long-erm impact across the Fenway neighborhood.

Project Title: Ardea Youth Climate Coalition
Project Description:

The Ardea Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) is an initiative of the Kalamazoo Climate Crisis Coalition (KCCC), a regional hub for climate action and community resilience. Formed in 2019, KCCC unites residents, institutions, and local governments around equitable climate solutions. Ardea emerged from one urgent question voiced by young people: β€œWhere can we learn the skills to make real change?”

Ardea provides that pathway. Each year, a diverse cohort of high school students from across Kalamazoo County is selected through a competitive application process. While participants share a commitment to environmental protection and social justice, many have had limited access to climate education or civic engagement. Ardea fills this gap through a transformative, year-long learning experience grounded in climate justice, science, and democracy.

The program begins with a 40-hour summer Climate Leadership Intensive blending classroom learning with hands-on training. Students study climate science, environmental policy, energy systems, and environmental justice while practicing organizing, public speaking, storytelling, and facilitation. Guest speakers include community activists, researchers, policy advocates, and Indigenous leaders who model diverse pathways for climate action. The intensive also helps each cohort build the trust and culture needed for effective organizing.

Throughout the school year, students meet twice monthly to deepen their learning and implement collaborative projects. Cohorts choose focus areas such as sustainable fashion education, youth engagement, curriculum reform, or climate literacy advocacy. The 2025–26 cohort is leading a campaign to strengthen Michigan’s K–12 climate education standards, gathering data from students and teachers and meeting with legislators to support improvements to House Bill 4961.

All projects are youth-designed and supported by adult mentors and community partners. Students gain real-world experience in coalition buildingβ€”working alongside groups like MYLES and DAYUMβ€”while developing skills in organizing, communication, environmental research, and policy analysis.

Ardea is free for participants and provides stipends, meals, supplies, and transportation support to ensure equitable access.

Project Title: Empowering Foster Youth Through Identity, Belonging, and Enrichment
Project Description:

This Is Me empowers foster youth across Southern Minnesota by providing identity-affirming, trauma-informed supports that build confidence, belonging, and long-term well-being. Youth in foster care face overwhelming challengesβ€”frequent placement changes, instability, school disruption, and traumaβ€”that place them at significantly higher risk for academic failure, mental health struggles, and involvement in the juvenile legal system. Our project addresses these challenges through three core components: identity, belonging, and enrichment.

First, our identity-building programs provide youth with meaningful ephemeraβ€”such as senior photos, adoption and reunification photography, yearbooks, and school memorabilia. For children who often lack tangible proof of their own story, these items become emotional anchors, reinforcing their self-worth and helping them build a cohesive sense of identity despite transitions.

Second, our mentorship program offers consistent, trauma-informed support by pairing foster youth with trained adult mentors for a minimum of one year. Mentors meet weekly with their mentees, offering stability, encouragement, and positive relationship-building during the critical ages of 11–15. These relationships reduce feelings of isolation, increase resilience, and serve as powerful protective factors against the foster-care-to-prison pipeline.

Third, our enrichment and extracurricular support provides access to sports, arts, lessons, clubs, and community experiences that foster belonging and engagement. These opportunities help youth build positive peer networks, discover strengths, and stay connected to school and community life.

With support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation, This Is Me will expand these services to reach more foster youth across rural Southern Minnesota. Funding will directly support photography sessions, yearbooks, mentorship activities, enrichment scholarships, and the organizational capacity needed to deliver dependable support to vulnerable youth.

Together, these programs empower foster youth to feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving their full potential.
