Project Title: Support for our Playmakers
Project Description:

Starfinder Foundation’s motto—“Soccer for Social Change, Leadership Beyond the Game”—aligns with the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation’s commitment to improving the lives of young people across the United States.

Our flagship program, Playmakers, serves 100 high school-aged youth from across Philadelphia, representing students from over 25 schools. Using the universal accessibility of soccer, Playmakers engages youth from underserved communities and supports their growth through three core pillars: Health & Physical Fitness, Social-Emotional Learning, and Future Focus.

The year-round program includes after-school, weekend, and summer activities. From November to May, youth participate in at least six hours of structured programming each week during the school year. Sessions promote healthy habits, emotional well-being, and goal setting for life after high school.

At the heart of the Playmakers experience is our R.E.A.C.H. agreement—Readiness, Empathy, Attitude, Communication, and Hard Work—which cultivates self-awareness, resilience, and leadership. Programming is led by trained Coach-Mentors, all Starfinder alumni, who complete over 20 hours of annual training in positive youth development, trauma-informed care, cultural competency, and mentoring practices.

Starfinder eliminates traditional barriers to participation including costs, access to transportation, food, academic support, and equipment. This holistic model ensures that youth can fully engage—regardless of financial or logistical challenges.

The outcomes speak for themselves: 100% of Playmakers participants graduate from high school (compared to 74% citywide), and 92% go on to post-secondary education (compared to just 41% citywide).

The Starfinder Foundation respectfully requests a grant of $10,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation to keep Playmakers accessible and impactful for youth across Philadelphia.

Project Title: Art Mentorship for Kids
Project Description:

The Art Mentorship for Kids & Teens is a dynamic, community-rooted program by the Bless The Children Project that provides children ages 7–12 with meaningful access to the visual arts. Our mission is to inspire creativity, build confidence, and nurture self-expression through professional mentorship in a safe, supportive environment.

Our program launched in 2014, offers weekly hands-on art sessions led by experienced mentors. In Summer 2025, we are expanding to a four-week immersive program, with three sessions per week, utilizing both indoor and outdoor spaces to stimulate imagination and play. Students will explore drawing, illustration, character design, animation, toy design, and storytelling — while learning fundamental artistic skills and techniques.

Beyond skill-building, the program cultivates emotional resilience, collaboration, and pride in personal and cultural identity. Youth participants are mentored to become storytellers, creative thinkers, and future community leaders. We aim to reach underserved children in rural Northern California who may not otherwise have access to high-quality art education.

Grant funding will support art supplies, mentor stipends, and scholarship opportunities for low-income families. With community engagement at its heart, the program concludes with a public art showcase to celebrate the children’s work and accomplishments.

Our vision is to make art a lifelong tool for empowerment, healing, and joy. Through this program, Bless The Children Project is planting seeds of creativity that grow far beyond the classroom.

Project Title: Empowering K-12 Unhoused Students with Arts, Education, and Health and Human Services
Project Description:

Mission: Monarch School Project nurtures resilience in unhoused youth and their families. We empower students to influence their own growth in the areas of academic success and social emotional learning. We reinforce the existing strength of families so that students can thrive in school and in life.
Overview: Since 1987, we have been a place of belonging for thousands of unhoused youth, offering a safe and supportive environment that fosters learning and healing. Serving over 550 students, families and alumni each year, the school is a public-private partnership between the San Diego County Office of Education and Monarch School Project, a 501(c)(3). Named by our students for the transformational power of the butterfly, Monarch School is the nation’s only K-12 public school exclusively for unhoused youth.
Comprehensive Programs: Educational support includes academic intervention, tutoring, and college and career readiness. Creative Youth Development (CYD) programs offer opportunities in visual art, music, theater, and dance to help students discover their talents, express themselves, celebrate their culture, and build community. Health and welfare services include strength-based case management to navigate to food, shelter, and income stability for the entire family. This program is supported by licensed clinical and behavioral mental health care. Our Butterfly Boutique provides clothes, shoes, care kits, and access to showers and laundry facilities.
Impacts: Core to evaluating our success is the success of our students. Our Social Emotional Student Growth Survey, developed with University of San Diego, shows students regularly improve feelings like self-esteem and safety, and skills like collaboration and perseverance –metrics that are linked to high attendance, academic performance, and graduation. Our resilient students maintain an average daily attendance rate of 82%, compared to 76% for unhoused youth nationwide, and graduate at a rate of 88%, far exceeding the 68% national average for unhoused youth.

Project Title: Thrive
Project Description:

July 30, 2025

Mr. Charles A. Hermanowski
Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation
President
Post Office Box 810005
Boca Raton, Florida 33481-0005

Dear Mr. Hermanowski,

In my role with Freedom in Education as the Chief Development officer for this past 12 months I have been making connections with philanthropic organizations to this worthy new start up. As I studied the foundation’s website, I was intrigued by the mission of so many of your grantees in 2024. The themes of children, granting them access to opportunities, education, even a chance to enjoy a horseback ride experience. It is my conviction that my organization might be a fit for some of the giving priorities of the foundation.

At Freedom in Education, we want to change the way children learn, the methods by which teachers instruct, and how parents can become engaged. What makes our mission so important? Despite historic levels of educational spending in the United States, student achievement in core subjects continues to decline. Only 1 in 3 eighth graders are proficient in reading or math. We believe our educational systems can do better.

On behalf of Freedom in Education, I respectfully request a grant of $5,000 in support of our national THRIVE! Campaign—a bold, three-year, $10 million initiative to reimagine K–12 education across the United States.
Freedom in Education is currently engaging with the State Education Departments in Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia to enhance learning in the classroom, school choice, and parental transparency. Our mission is rooted in the belief that every child deserves an excellent education—grounded in knowledge, virtue, effective teaching methods, and guided by well-informed, engaged parents.
We exist to:
– Enhance learning in the classroom
– Strengthen educational freedom
– Ensure parents are educated to become better advocates for their children

Your grant of $5,000 would directly support:
– The expansion of our work into new states
– Advancing content-rich academic standards and aligned professional development
– Designing robust knowledge-based curricula grounded in our model standards
– Strengthening educational freedom through state-level partnerships
– Equipping parents with sophisticated tools to navigate their child’s education
– Engaging more teachers in common-sense effective classroom solutions.
At the heart of our work is a deep commitment to children—especially those in underserved communities. With your support, we will move closer to a future in which:
– Proficiency rates in reading and math will be doubled
– Parents are equipped to advocate boldly for their children
– Teachers are supported with evidence-based instructional methods
– States and districts are held accountable for student outcomes

Thank you for considering this request. I would welcome the opportunity to provide more information or answer any questions.
I’d like to invite The Charles and Anne Hermanowski foundation to join us in making a significant difference in how children grow and learn.

Sincerely,

Stephen N. Krentel

Project Title: RareCare Companion: Pediatric and Adolescent Support Module
Project Description:

The National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) is developing the RareCare Companion, an innovative digital and printable toolkit designed to support children and families navigating the challenges of a rare disease diagnosis. With over 10,000 known rare diseases, most with limited research, few treatment options, and fragmented information, families, especially those with children, are often left overwhelmed, isolated, and uncertain about the next steps in their care journey.

The RareCare Companion directly aligns with the Hermanowski Foundation’s mission to enhance health, welfare, and education for children up to age 21. This resource includes expert-created content tailored to the unique needs of children and adolescents, including pediatric care navigation, support for transitions from pediatric to adult healthcare, emotional and mental well-being resources, and caregiver guidance. It also provides age-appropriate educational materials designed to help families, teachers, and healthcare providers better understand and manage rare disease challenges, ensuring young patients are supported in all aspects of their lives at home, in school, and in clinical care settings.

By offering step-by-step care navigation tools, guidance on insurance and financial assistance, and short educational videos featuring healthcare professionals and patient families, the RareCare Companion serves as both a healthcare intervention and an educational outreach tool. It empowers families to make informed care decisions, reduces the emotional burden of isolation, and strengthens children’s overall health and resilience.

A $10,000 grant from the Hermanowski Foundation would fund a dedicated module focusing on pediatric and adolescent needs, including the production of educational videos featuring physicians, social workers, and patient families. These videos will address topics such as understanding a diagnosis, advocating for care, and managing emotional challenges, complementing the toolkit’s resources and ensuring children receive the guidance they deserve.

Total Project Budget: 500000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): NORD is actively securing diverse funding to bring the RareCare Companion to life. We are pursuing grants from private foundations, corporate partners, and individual donors to cover the full $500,000 project budget. The Hermanowski Foundation’s $10,000 grant would directly support the pediatric and adolescent module, complementing other contributions dedicated to content creation, video production, and outreach efforts.
