Project Title: Ethical Leadership for Economically Disadvantaged Students
Project Description:
Students Shoulder-to-Shoulder (SStS) equips high school students to become ethical leaders through immersive, international service-learning experiences. Our mission is to inspire and support generations of ethical leaders who act with integrity, serve their communities, and pursue solutions that balance economic growth, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship.
What sets SStS apart is our deep, sustained commitment to both leadership development and equity. We do more than expose students to global challenges—we empower them to take meaningful action alongside nonprofit leaders working in communities across four continents. Students engage in a structured program that includes ethical case studies, international fieldwork, and a local community project upon return.
Our approach is supported by a diverse, cross-sector ecosystem that includes students, educators, nonprofit professionals, businesses, alumni, and philanthropists. We prioritize inclusive governance, intentional equity, and shared leadership. Each year, our Ethical Leadership Forum brings all stakeholders together to share strategies and stories of applied ethical leadership in action.
Our request to the Hermanowski Foundation is to support need-based scholarships for high school students from low-income backgrounds. These scholarships eliminate financial barriers, opening access to transformational experiences that many students would otherwise be unable to afford. One alumnus—now entering Stanford Law—describes the SStS experience as a turning point that reshaped his life’s trajectory.
Your support will help create a powerful ripple effect: ethical leaders emerging from underserved communities and carrying that ethic into their schools, careers, and civic lives. This grant will also be matched—potentially doubled—by our partner organization, Summer Search, which operates in the San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and Seattle, thereby amplifying the impact of your investment.
