Project Title: GALS Mental Health Retreat
Project Description:

Girls Athletic Leadership School Los Angeles (GALS LA) is seeking a $5,000 grant to support a Mental Health Retreat Day for our 6th–8th grade students, many of whom have recently experienced the trauma of the devastating LA wildfires. As a school serving 96% girls of color, with 88% coming from low-income families, our students often face compounding stressors that impact their emotional well-being. This retreat will provide a day of healing through mindfulness workshops, movement-based wellness activities, art therapy, and guided discussions led by mental health professionals. By fostering resilience, self-care strategies, and peer support, we aim to equip our students with tools to navigate stress and trauma, ensuring they can continue to thrive academically and personally. Your support will help us create a safe, restorative space for our girls to process their experiences and emerge stronger.

Project Title: Early Literacy High Impact Tutoring
Project Description:

The Early Excellence Project’s High-Impact Tutoring Program is an innovative literacy intervention designed to close early learning gaps and build strong reading foundations for elementary students in the Pittsburgh region. Rooted in research-based instructional strategies, this program provides personalized, small-group tutoring during the school day to ensure students receive targeted support without disrupting family schedules.

Our highly trained tutors work in deep collaboration with partner schools, aligning lessons with classroom instruction to reinforce key literacy skills. Through evidence-based reading strategies, structured lessons, and individualized feedback, students build confidence and make measurable progress in their reading abilities.

Beyond academics, we cultivate a culture of belonging and achievement, ensuring that every child, especially Black and other marginalized students, receives the support they need to thrive. By investing in early literacy, we empower young learners, strengthen their academic trajectories, and contribute to dismantling systemic barriers in education.

Project Title: Sutton Project
Project Description:

Our organization’s mission is to bring the light to schools within the Isaac, Fowler, and other school districts. Through this project, we pack and provide food boxes for around 15 different schools and 1,700 families for the Thanksgiving holiday; each of these boxes go to feed 4 people. The food we provide includes a nutritious Thanksgiving meal for a whole family. In these boxes, we put canned vegetables such as corn and green beans. We also provide a turkey voucher, giving them the opportunity to get a healthy turkey for their family. During the fall semester, our school will unite and fundraise to provide Thanksgiving meals as well as Christmas gifts for many families within these communities. Since we aim to provide as much love and support as possible, we will extend our fundraising goals into the Christmas season by collecting Christmas gifts for the students at Alta E Butler, J.B. Sutton, and refugee families. These food boxes and gifts are directly delivered to the students and families. We feel it is also our responsibility to help the struggling refugee families, as well as the schools. Refugees have the constant struggle of not being able to provide, they have had to restart their lives, and anything we can do to help is very appreciated by them. Not to mention, all the extra food we have left goes to food banks in the community. We typically spend around $65,000 on this project, using it on food, boxes, toys, ect. As this is our fifteenth year with the Sutton project, we can ultimately see the goodness of the project through its continuous blessings for this struggling community. We hope to continue this life changing project for years and years to come.

Project Title: Raton Reading Proficiency Project
Project Description:

The NM Public Education Department Report Card for the 2023-2024 academic year shows that only 39% of our students are proficient in reading. We will offer an out-of-school time (OST) program to pilot an alternative online reading proficiency application designed to improve reading proficiency. Improvement results will be reported to the Raton Board of Education for consideration in purchasing this alternative program for use in subsequent school years.

The online application is MindPlay Reading Ultra by Essential Education and will require purchasing 30 licenses as well as paying for two part-time teachers (1 teacher to 15 students ratio) to administer the program. The program will also require a monthly rental fee (including utilities) of $1,200 per month. The target population will be 6th & 7th graders. We will utilize a previously established computer training center designed to accommodate 30 participants.

MindPlay Reading Ultra is a virtual reading program designed to provide research-based reading instruction and offers data-driven insights to support student progress. It utilizes adaptive technology to create personalized learning plans for each student, focusing on key areas like phonics, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and phonemic awareness. MindPlay Reading Ultra is grounded in research on effective reading instruction, including the Science of Reading and Orton-Gillingham approaches, ensuring that the program’s strategies and activities align with best practices. MindPlay Reading Ultra has earned ESSA Tier 3 recognition for its effectiveness in enhancing reading instruction, demonstrating its impact on student achievement.
