Project Title: The Passport Program at The Student ACES Center (The SAC)
Project Description:
The Passport Program at The Student ACES Center (The SAC) in Belle Glade, Florida, equips high school students with the tools to graduate and thrive by addressing systemic challenges. The SAC is an afterschool program that also operates throughout the summer, providing a safe, stable, and nurturing environment for students. The program breaks the cycle of generational poverty and fosters healthy lifestyles through seven key focus areas: Academic Advising, Career Readiness, College Prep, Health and Wellness, Mental Health, Character Development, and Entrepreneurship. The Passport Program is research informed and developed by the Student ACES organization.
Students progress at their own pace, completing structured tasks that align with their grade level. After each grade the students receive a new passport book. Each completed task earns a stamp in their personalized passport book, motivating them intrinsically while tracking their growth. The Passport Program’s unique design supports students in navigating educational and professional pathways, preparing them for post-secondary success and stable, supportive environments.
By addressing the social determinants of health, the program helps students overcome barriers such as inadequate education, poor health outcomes, and economic instability. Operating year-round, it offers daily support, mentorship, and access to vital resources that foster confidence and life-readiness. The Passport Program Manager, Tajelia Green, a Student ACES alumna, exemplifies the program’s mission by mentoring students in her home community.
The program’s impact is evident: over 99% of participants report improved decision-making, mental health awareness, confidence, and preparedness for life beyond high school. The Passport Program embodies a dual-pronged prevention approach, combining structured tasks with supportive relationships. Its holistic and measurable outcomes align with the mission of the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Foundation to provide young people with the tools to succeed and reach their full potential. This innovative program serves as a model for empowering youth in underserved communities nationwide.
