Project Title: Scholarships for ALICE Families
Project Description:

Our initiative, "Scholarships for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) Families," tackles the critical need for accessible childcare in our community, especially for families facing financial challenges. El Campito, renowned for its top-tier childcare services, caters to children aged 6 weeks to 12 years.

In our community, affordable childcare options are scarce, leaving many families without reliable and quality care. As a childcare desert, the lack of accessible and affordable childcare poses a significant obstacle for ALICE families, impeding their ability to work and pursue educational or career opportunities.

Our program seeks to alleviate the financial burden on ALICE families by providing scholarships for childcare services at El Campito. These scholarships will cover the costs of childcare for children within our age range, ensuring that families can access top-quality care without financial strain.

Our selection process prioritizes families demonstrating financial need and a genuine commitment to utilizing childcare services to support their educational or employment endeavors. Additionally, we are committed to providing comprehensive support to scholarship recipients, including access to wraparound services and resources to address any additional needs they may have.

By offering scholarships for childcare at El Campito, we support children’s educational and developmental needs and empower ALICE families to pursue their goals with confidence. Investing in childcare for ALICE families fosters children’s growth and development while enabling parents to work or pursue further education, ultimately strengthening our community’s workforce and economy.

With the generous support of the Hermanowski Foundation, we aim to secure funding for our scholarship program and make a tangible difference in the lives of ALICE families who rely on childcare services at El Campito. Together, we can build a more equitable and supportive community where every child has access to the care and opportunities they deserve, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Project Title: ASL Theatre
Project Description:

Thank you for your time and consideration in funding this request.

I am submitting this grant request on behalf of the Upper Deerfield Township School District from the Charles F. Seabrook Elementary School building. We are a PreK-3 to 2nd grade elementary school with approximately 400 students located in Cumberland County, New Jersey. For over a century we have served the families of Upper Deerfield, as we are a multigenerational school, with grandparents, parents and now children walking the same halls (some having the same teachers). Not only have we supplied a solid education to our students but many community events as well, such as Community Days, Trunk or Treat, and the 5K run.

For the first time in our history, a volunteer is coming in to assist the teachers to teach our students American Sign Language, as well as some aspects of the Deaf culture. The students will learn the signs for colors, family members, animals as well as various holiday signs. There is hope to celebrate their year of learning with a field trip to put their new knowledge to the test.

I am requesting $7,700 to take our K-2 students on a field trip to the Levoy Theatre in Millville, New Jersey, to watch the performance of Hands Up Silent Theatreโ€™s Disney Little Mermaid Jr. This production is unique as it is not only in English, but also in American Sign Language. This performance is targeted to schools throughout New Jersey and the greater Philadelphia area including schools for the Deaf. The total amount of this grant will go to cover the expenses of the trip including transportation and tickets for the approximate 250 students plus staff to attend.

Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: 2025 Spring and Summer Classic
Project Description:

The Upper Chesapeake Baseball Festival (UCBF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the growth of youth baseball in Harford County, MD. Our two annual tournaments serve youth baseball programs for kids 8-18, including teams from Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region. Our tournaments annually attract about 300 teams from 10 states, with over 3,000 participants and over 7,000 spectators.
UCBF’s mission is threefold:

(1) Raise money to directly support local recreation councils, funding Harford County baseball programsโ€™ essential operations (purchasing field maintenance and supplies, equipment, insurance, etc.) while keeping registration fees for participants as low as possible. Youth development of work ethic, teamwork, sportsmanship, and a love of the game should be for all โ€“ without a financial barrier to entry.

(2) Provide Harford County baseball teams with a high-quality baseball tournament โ€œin their backyard,โ€ reducing the cost and administrative burden. We meet our participants โ€œwhere they are,โ€ offering A Divisions for elite teams seeking top competition. Perhaps more importantly, our B and C Divisions ensure that all our young athletes and their families have access to the same high quality tournament experience.

(3) Positively impact the local economy of Harford County, MD. We seek to be an economic driver in terms of impact on the local hospitality sector, local restaurants, gas stations, and shops. We source exclusively Harford County vendors, including our umpiring association partners, equipment, trophies, promotional materials, etc.

Specific focus for 2025 is the availability of officiating. There is a national shortage of umpires in youth baseball. While there are many factors at play, it is undeniable that UCBF โ€“ like all other baseball organizations โ€“ faces a dwindling, aging population of umpires. The funds we raise will help us increase the number of umpires available, and ensure that our pay structure is in keeping with the officialsโ€™ competing opportunities.
