Project Title: Empowering Youth Through Music in Extended After-School Programs
Project Description:

Empowering Youth Through Music in Extended After-School Programs is an initiative that supports Soundscapes in meeting increased demand for student participation and covering rising expenses for staff, supplies, and equipment. With this support, Soundscapes will continue to expand our reach, driven by positive participant experiences, particularly among underserved youth in under-resourced communities. Soundscapes offers various programs, including after-school music programs, a regional youth orchestra, summer camps, and a youth employment program, all aimed at instilling transformative life skills through music. Specifically, this request targets support for two daily after-school programs in Newport News, providing free music instruction, instruments, meals, and transportation for students from Title I elementary schools, Carver Elementary and Greenwood Elementary. These programs are vital for families affected by poverty, offering essential services at no cost to participants. Currently, Soundscapes serves 200 students through these after-school programs, with a focus on accessibility and inclusivity for disadvantaged communities.

Project Title: Advancing Pre-8th Grade Student Outcome Through the Power of Home
Project Description:

HW! seeks to eradicate educational inequality for under-resourced school communities by activating parents to become co-educators supporting their children’s learning. Findings by the US Department of Education reveal COVID erased two decades’ of educational progress in reading and math. Unfortunately, students in St. Louis did not fare better than national trends. In 2023, leading education researchers analyzed data from 7,800 school districts to understand the scope of pandemic-related learning losses — St. Louis was among the top four hardest-hit communities in the nation, showing the highest rate of students below grade level in math and reading due to the pandemic. Among students from grades 3-8 in St. Louis, at most 65% in any grade scored above the level of Basic in English. In the face of these significant setbacks, education experts persistently call for extended instructional time, beyond the school day, to accelerate learning for the students.

Missouri students spend just 14% of the year in the school, the remaining 86% is managed by families – and yet, the home and outside of class time remains the greatest untapped resource by most school systems. Many school personnel, especially those in low income communities, lack family engagement competencies and related training and support. Moreover, teachers receive only limited education and professional development in this crucial area. In fact, less than ⅓ of states, including Missouri, require learning about family engagement strategies to become a teacher.

HW! aims to fill this systemic gap with programming strategically structured to support schools, teachers, and parents in improving literacy, math, and attendance for students. Through our program, parents are empowered with coaching and equipped with tools to bring the classroom home leading to increased instructional time for students. Families meaningfully engaged in their children’s learning and development positively impact lifelong health, academic, and well-being outcomes.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 30, 2024
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: 5th Element Center for Dance
Project Description:

5th Element Center for Dance provides dance instruction and supportive developmental opportunities to low-income students and students of color between the ages of 4 and 18 in Aurora, Colorado. In order to combat inequities in this field, the instruction and opportunities are provided with no cost barrier. Through instruction of dance, social emotional and relational learning, and academic support, 5th Element Center for Dance offers a system of resources that low-income students and students of color need to thrive as competitive dancers, as cultural producers, and as humans successfully navigating their own wellness.

5th Element Center for Dance would leverage $10,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation to expand programming for students of all age groups. In particular, 15 students will receive dance, engagement classes, and academic support during the 2024-2025 school year. Nearly 80% of the students we serve qualify for Colorado safety net services (i.e. SNAP, housing assistance). To accommodate these students, we offer reduced tuition for all services, thereby removing the financial obstacles that often prevent them from pursuing their passion for dance.

In 2024, 5th Element Center for Dance aims to provide dance programming to 120 students. Under the leadership of dedicated teaching artists, students will participate in dance showcases, recitals, intensives, and competitions. Our work provides social-based resources for youth in our community through the availability of highly involved staff. It is important to directly combat key factors of personal, interpersonal, and community trauma that influence academic, social, and economic inequities in addition to tending to the consequential inequities themselves, like an achievement gap.
