The program’s objectives are clear: empower Black college women by providing financial assistance and resources, foster excellence in Health, Civic Engagement, and the Arts, and cultivate leadership skills. It addresses systemic barriers to ensure equitable access to education and professional opportunities.

Operating within three categories – Health, Civic Engagement, and the Arts – the program invites applications from Black college women enrolled in accredited institutions. Recipients receive personalized mentorship, networking opportunities, and ongoing support. A dedicated committee selects scholars based on merit and alignment with program objectives.

The Coco Scholar Program is more than financial aid; it’s a catalyst for change. By nurturing the dreams of Black college women, it fosters a community of leaders and changemakers. Project Title: Teen Support Bags
Project Description:

Teenagers with cancer fall through the cracks between the younger pediatric patient support and the adult support programs. Founder, Nikki, was 17 when she formed the foundation in September 2010 after her own cancer diagnosis earlier that year.

Her main focus was and still is to help teens feel more supported by receiving our Teen Support Bag with items chosen specifically for teenagers. Each bag contains items such as: journal, adult coloring book, knit cap, water bottle, playing cards, game book, ear buds, stress ball, fuzzy socks, free t-shirt coupon, and more. Each bag costs the foundation $85.

Our highly popular Teen Support Bag provides inspiration and support for teenagers with all cancers across the country. Currently, we have almost 200 hospitals/centers in our network that distribute our Teen Support Bags to teenagers in every state. Our Teen Support Bags have been given to almost 12,000 teenagers so far, as of early 2024!

The positive feedback that we receive from hospital staff and parents, along with the teenagers, is extremely positive. The social workers and Child Life Specialists even tell us that the bag helps patients open up to conversations that they had not be willing to have.

Your grant will enable us to ship out bags to 50 more teen cancer patients. Thank you!

Project Title: Charitable Immunization Program
Project Description:

Community Nursing Services (CNS) has provided compassionate health and hospice care in Utah for 95 years and life-saving immunizations for 30 years. The CNS Immunization Program meets individuals in need where they are, from population-dense cities to rural towns throughout the state. Each year, we host 1,800 – 3,000 mobile immunization clinics throughout Utah, providing vaccinations to 50,000+ individuals and charitable vaccinations to 10,000+ uninsured or underinsured individuals.

Many Utah citizens report not having access to immunizations because of a lack of insurance and funds to pay for vaccines. The CNS Charitable Immunization Program bridges the gap in access to immunizations. Our Charitable Immunization Program focuses on keeping kids in school by providing charitable immunizations required for enrollment. Many people who come to us for charitable immunizations are single parents hoping to get their children vaccinated so they can enroll in school. Others in need include individuals without insurance or the funds to pay for vaccinations. The most common charitable vaccinations we administer are COVID-19, influenza, HPV, pneumonia, and tetanus.

The impact the CNS Charitable Immunization Program has on our community is ongoing and, in some cases, everlasting. We respectfully invite the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to help us meet the increasing need for charitable immunizations in the community in the coming year by contributing to our program.
