Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: School Programs
Project Description:

South Carolina’s public-school system consistently ranks in the nation’s bottom ten, with disparities between low-income students and their peers. Since opening in 2000, the South Carolina Aquarium has served the state’s students and educators through Dominion Energy School Programs, providing an average of 6,000 K-12 students and 425 teachers annually with free and immersive STEM education to reinforce state standards.

Before the Aquarium opened its doors to connect people with water, wildlife, and wild places, this flagship education program was informed by a master education plan. Combining the joy of learning with the wonder of nature, each program has an original curriculum designed to meet state standards by grade level. Teachers invited to participate in the program attend a development workshop and are provided pre-visit and post-visit activities for their classroom. Students visit the Aquarium during field trips to interact with live animals and engage in age-appropriate lessons that complement classroom teachings.

Teachers apply to the program through a lottery system, in which applications from Title I schools are prioritized to support disadvantaged students. In the 2022-2023 school year, 422 applications were received, but the program could only award 119 programs due to classroom limitations, meaning that for every class served, two were turned away. Due to overwhelming demand for School Programs, the Aquarium incorporated program expansion into our current five-year strategic plan.

In early 2025, the Aquarium will debut the Boeing Learning Lab, a 9,000-square-foot education complex that will serve as the main hub for School Programs. A short walk from the Aquarium, this state-of-the-art facility will add five waterfront classrooms to almost double the program’s capacity and increase acceptance rate from 30% to 50%. During this exciting time of expansion and growth, the Aquarium remains committed to education and hopes your foundation will consider supporting School Programs.

Total Project Budget: $328,679

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The Aquarium’s fundraising team seeks annual funding in support of SPs through individual, corporate, and foundational giving platforms. Additionally, School Programs receives financial support through the revenue that is generated by Aquarium ticketing sales. Committed funding raised toward the execution and operation of Dominion Energy School Programs for the 2024 academic year is as follows: 1.) Corporate funders: Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation, Trident Construction, Gildan Activewear Inc., The Boeing Company, AFL Global, State Farm; 2.) Foundational giving: J. H. Walker Legacy Foundation, The Kennedy-Herterich Foundation, Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Joseph J. Schott Foundation, The Ceres Foundation. Potential funders to date include: The Mark Elliot Motley Foundation, The Henry and Sylvia Yaschik Foundation, The Brutten Family Foundation, Leon Levine Foundation, and The Comis Foundation.

Project Title: Upper Darby Summer Stage 2025
Project Description:

Upper Darby Summer Stage has empowered young people and entertained families for nearly 50 years. The crown jewel of the performing arts in Upper Darby, Summer Stage has been described by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “reach[ing] a level of professionalism and aesthetic excellence that is nothing short of miraculous.”

Over the course of a season, the Summer Stage staff of teachers, theater professionals, and college arts majors introduce students to the fundamentals of theater. Then they hone their craft and share it with the Upper Darby community, performing in one of seven high-quality shows over six weeks. Our Mainstage program produces a Broadway musical that rivals those of Philadelphia’s professional theaters.

Summer Stage introduces countless young people and families to the magic of live theater. Alumni include Emmy Award winner Tina Fey, regional theatre founders and directors, television actors and screenwriters, Broadway performers, technicians, and designers.

Summer Stage is often the first live theater experience for both our audience and participants. Those are formative moments when a lifelong love for theater may be created, and we strive to make them the most memorable and magical.

From the beginning of the participant experience, our mantra is “The Magic Begins with You.” Students are the drivers of their experience and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of different hands-on theater experiences. They are given responsibilities and roles, and are expected to fulfill what they take on. Students move scenery, learn blocking and choreography, and hold real sheet music. We also share with students resources for the stories we tell, and students learn dramaturgy and historic references.

Summer Stage’s first production, The Magic of America, premiered on July 3, 1976, on the eve of the US Bicentennial. In 2025, we’ll celebrate our 50th year, which will include a special alumni performance.

Today’s Date: March 26, 2024
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Dermal Neurofiroma Consortium
Project Description:

Established in 2014, the mission of The Giorgio Foundation is to fund research related to pediatric neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), a devastating genetic disorder which causes uncontrolled tumor growth. We seek $10,000 to support our Dermal Neurofibroma Consortium to advance very specific research and offer children hope for tumor-free lives. This collaboration with our “dream team” of researchers has already resulted in 15 groundbreaking studies conducted at academic institutions including University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, University of Texas Southwestern and Washington University in St. Louis. Occurring in about 1 in every 3,000 births, NF1 is referred to by medical authorities as "the most common disorder you’ve probably never heard of.” The painful, disfiguring tumors that grow on the skin (dermal neurofibromas) affect 90% of NF1 patients beginning at puberty. These tumors are not life-threatening, but they are horribly life-altering. The Giorgio Foundation was inspired by Giorgio Borzellino and established by his family. Born a perfectly healthy baby, Giorgio was diagnosed with NF1 at age five.

The Giorgio Foundation has no overhead. All administrative expenses are funded by a separate nonprofit. Thus, every dollar contributed to The Giorgio Foundation goes directly toward much-needed research ($3.2 million as of 12/31/23). Insights derived from the science we support are relevant to the estimated 2 million who suffer with NF1 and the family members who are part of a difficult and unpredictable journey. A dream team of researchers has proven that the deformed NF1 gene can be made whole through what is known as trans-splicing. Additional research is needed to continue exploration of the power of the gene correction in slowing or even stopping tumor growth. An advancement such as this for a disorder like NF1 has great value for other researchers examining a wide range of similar disorders.

Total Project Budget: $100,000.00

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Over $56,000 has been raised this year to support the Dermal Neurofribroma Consortium through a fundraiser supported by area businesses that includes: McCartney’s Hollidaysburg Family Dental NPC SpillTech New Pig Energy Interpak MasonWays Plastics LLC

Project Duration: Through December 31, 2024
Geographical Area Served: Project is national in scope

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Whole Child Model
Project Description:

These funds will assist us in meeting the children at their current level of education and provide advancement by relevant MIND-BODY-SOUL programming through our Whole Child model. Data from nearby elementary schools illustrates the immense needs of the youth in our community. 95% of children are minority, 89% are on the free/reduced lunch program, 71% come from a home with limited English language proficiency, and 81% are categorized by Spring Branch ISD, the school district where the majority of our participants are enrolled, as "at risk" of not graduating from high school. These figures represent a need for a stronger means of entry for the youth to find their life calling and opportunity and improve the livelihoods of future generations living in the community. To that end, we are offering solutions to needs that should aid the community in both the short-term and long-term futures of their children. Our Whole Child model focuses on holistically growing the skills of our youth through the MIND-BODY-SOUL programming. Performances on the field, scores in the classroom, interpersonal and communication skills all continue to develop as a result of the efforts of the Whole Child model. This opens doorways that in many cases, prior to SpringSpirit, would not be there or, at the very least, were there but hard to find and pursue. These children will develop confidence and act as models to others, which, in the long run, can act as inspiration to their families and others in the community to do the same.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 26, 2024
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Leadership Development and Career Readiness for First Generation and/or Low-Income Philadelphia College Students
Project Description:

Collective Success Network (CSN) is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that supports and empowers first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI) college students to achieve their potential by providing mentoring, professional development, networking, and leadership opportunities. Most CSN students identify as both first-generation to college and low-income and are between the ages of 18 and 21. Typical demographics for CSN program participants are: 43% Asian; 27% African American/Black; 17% Hispanic/Latinx; 13% Caucasian/White; 70% Female; 25% Male; 5% LGBTQ. Since 2017, CSN has empowered over 1000 Philadelphia-area FGLI students.

FGLI students are burdened with college debt, under-employment and systemic biases. What makes CSN unique is that we focus on developing FGLI strengths, professional skills and career readiness rather than on degree attainment. CSN works with FGLI students to design and deliver programs that are customized and complement other available resources. Student feedback helps CSN continuously improve and adapt our curriculum. As a result, CSN programs are innovative and allow FGLI students to share their learnings and build relationships with professionals and peers from across different colleges, creating an expansive, diverse, and long-term community support system. With our current budget, CSN empowers 300 students annually from over 20 local colleges.

CSN strives to level the playing field for the large, diverse and underserved population of FGLI students who attend the numerous institutions of higher education in the Philadelphia area by providing (1) more on-line programming and (2) more post-pandemic opportunities for students and professionals to network in-person. Our proposal requests operational funds to enable CSN to continue our adaptive program development in the 2024-2025 academic year. Our aim is to help Philadelphia-area FGLI college students beat the odds, realize their potential and emerge as successful professionals, future leaders and agents of social change. We believe that CSN’s success will be scalable to other cities.

Total Project Budget: $140,000

Other Funding
