Project Title: Youth Apprenticeship: Art & Technology
Project Description:

Education is a primary focus of the program. Our year-round education programs offers paid apprenticeships for youth to work with professional Teaching Artists and create art for private and public commissions, as well as work for sale. Using art as a vehicle, ArtWorks strives to provide underserved youth access to quality arts education; cross-discipline education in science, math, reading, and health; a safe place to engage in meaningful activities during non-school hours; and positive role models. Staff schedules field trips to cultural institutions, when possible, which enhance the learning experience of apprentices. The well-being of youth is of utmost importance, and an art therapist provides regular group sessions and individual sessions, as needed.

ArtWorks staff interacts with other organizations and gives presentations at middle and high schools, churches, community centers, and social service organizations. Open applications are announced through social media and e-mail blasts. After a youth applies to the program, they will be invited to an interview at St. Louis ArtWorks as part of the acceptance and hiring process.

Depending on their interests and talents, they are assigned to an art discipline to work as a team with their peers under the guidance of professional Teaching Artists.
The teaching artists develop a curriculum that incorporates art skills and vocabulary based on Missouri Grade Level standards and STEAM concepts and skills. The hired youth are employed as apprentices to the artists in a specific discipline such as textiles, landscape architecture, mural painting, graphic design, videography, printmaking, sculpture, documentary film, photography, arts and technology, and our new Arts Basic 101.

Today’s Date: 2/5/2024
Requested Amount: 10000

Project Title: Student Success Program
Project Description:

Since 1986, Student Sponsor Partners (SSP) has been dedicated to its mission of breaking the cycle of poverty for New York City students from low-income backgrounds who struggle academically. These students typically come from families with an average annual per capita income of just $9,570. Upon entering the program, they exhibit middle to slightly below-average academic performance, with 97% belonging to minority communities, including Black/African American (24%), Hispanic (59%), Two or More Races (13%), and Asian/Pacific Islander (1%). Moreover, 80% come from single- or no-parent households, and 55% reside in the Bronx.

Despite these challenges, SSP firmly believes in the potential for success and self-sufficiency among these students when provided with the right opportunities, access, and support. To this end, SSP offers distinctively comprehensive services, which include: 1.) Private School Admission and Financial Aid, 2.) Personalized Adult Mentoring, 3.) College and Career Success, and 4.) Guidance and Support Services. SSP seeks funding for our college and career program, which lays the foundation for our students’ post-high school achievements. Annually, SSP organizes over 20 college and career sessions in collaboration with corporate partners and colleges. These sessions included a range of activities like college and career panels, essay workshops, information sessions with college admissions officers, and financial advising and mental wellness programs.

In the last school year, nearly 1,000 students benefited from high-quality education and support services, resulting in a 98% on-time graduation rate and nearly 80% immediate college enrollment among the Class of 2023. For those not immediately entering college, other paths to success include trade school, military careers, or college enrollment after a gap semester or year.
SSP expresses gratitude to The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation the opportunity to submit this grant request.
