Project Title: The New Drug Talk: Connect to Protect
Project Description:
Ed & Mary Ternan founded Song for Charlie (SFC) after losing their 22-year-old son Charlie to a fake Percocet pill containing fentanyl. Until Charlie’s death, the Ternan’s had never heard of fentanyl. Now, their mission is to make sure that no other family is blindsided by that tragedy that is taking too many young people. Overdoses among teenagers have doubled over the last decade; many have taken fentanyl pills that they believed contained a different drug, like Xanax, Percocet or Oxycodone. Drug overdoses and poisonings are now the third leading cause of death in among youth, killing more kids in the U.S. than cancer, infections and drowning. SFC is dedicated to educating kids, parents, and caregivers about the risks of self-medication and drug experimentation in the deadly era of fentanyl. We are a family-led nonprofit focused on the nexus of mental health and the new chemical drug landscape ─and with an emphasis on youth and families─ we are doing extraordinary work to change the stigmatizing culture around stress and anxiety so that we can save young lives. We are ensuring families have both the knowledge to navigate adolescence safely AND the tools to empower them to make better choices. Parents and caregivers are among the most important people in the lives of young children. Our newest initiative is a family-oriented educational hub, The New Drug Talk: Connect to Protect (The New Drug Talk | Song for Charlie). This digital portal is a $5M initiative designed to empower families with the knowledge and resources to protect themselves and their loved ones by bringing the urgent conversation around mental health and chemical substance use into the home.
