Project Title: STEM Waste 365 Program
Project Description:

MTAA has proposed to partner with Compton Unified School District, to host an annual science fair that allows students from all educational backgrounds to participate in a well-organized STEM event. At-risk youth students participate in yearly science fair, which incorporates all aspects of STEM. MTAA’s initiative branches off of the science fair and creates a recycling program fully managed and operated by the student body. Participants of the program demonstrates the knowledge and ability to implement 21st century skills that integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics necessary to launch the recycling program. MTAA’s Waste 365 STEM program will be piloted in the high-crime suburb section of Compton in Los Angeles County. Upon launching the pilot program, the goal is to then expand into other Los Angeles County elementary schools, which spans over 4,700 miles. Currently at-risk youth in Compton have little to no control over their environment, which is why it is essential for youth to understand the importance of education, specifically in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The MTAA program increases their exposure to STEM skills and their chances of graduating, obtaining a skill-based job and escaping the poverty cycle.
