Project Title: Glasses for LAUSD Students
Project Description:

The Power of Sight Foundation, a faith-based organization dedicated to improving vision health in low-income communities, is excited to launch a new initiative in collaboration with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Our project, "Glasses for LAUSD Students," seeks a grant of $10,000 to support the provision of free eyeglasses to students in need.

In discussions with the LAUSD Board of Directors, we identified a significant challenge: many students either lose, break, or cannot afford new glasses, which is crucial for their academic success and overall well-being. To address this, we have developed an innovative web portal that allows LAUSD nurses to easily request free glasses for students from our organization.

This grant will primarily fund the material costs and production of lenses for each pair of glasses from our optical lab. Our goal is to ensure that no student in the LAUSD is hindered in their educational journey due to a lack of proper eyewear. The project will not only provide immediate assistance in terms of vision correction but also aims to foster a better learning environment and improve academic performance among students.

The Power of Sight Foundation has a proven track record of its successful optical lab that has helped thousands of students in other districts. With this funding, we are confident that we can replicate our success within the LAUSD, making a lasting impact on the lives of many students. The project aligns perfectly with our mission to empower individuals through the gift of sight, particularly focusing on young learners who are at a critical stage of their educational and personal development.

Project Description:

The AFIL Way Program is an on-going, twenty-four hour educational and residential program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) or learning differences.

The skills taught by the AFIL professional staff are divided into three segments:

(1) Behavioral Skills that include Cooperation, Trust, Attitude, Responsibility, Work Ethic, Time Management and Socialization.

(3) Vocational Education & Maintenance such as Resume’ Development, Obtaining and Submitting Applications, Interview Coaching, Work Attire, Transportation to Interviews, Work Ethic, and Partnership with Job Coaches and Employers. (AFIL staff may assist with employer development, as they open their businesses to our students, who bring so many skills to the table and will enhance their workforce.)

The success of the AFIL program is measured in the ability of each student to meet specific individual goals as documented by the Program staff and evaluated by the student’s performance on a monthly basis. A staff member is on duty 24 hours a day in the dormitory, and several staff members are assigned to work with these students daily.

AFIL believes that independence requires employment. The goals for all students are to hold jobs in competitive employment; pay their own fees at AFIL; and, travel to those jobs using public or personal transportation. The student’s job, along with Social Security and other additional assistance, is expected to eventually provide enough income to cover their monthly rent and personal expenses.
