Project Title: College Intern Support
Project Description:

Exploradoor is an Indiana-based nonprofit led by two, minority women, that focuses on youth development in marginalized communities. We bridge the gap that exists for Black and Brown youth in aspiring to and pursuing further education or certifications. Oftentimes, students graduate from high school with little “real world,” career-based experience. Without support in finding these opportunities, it can be challenging for students and families to even know where to begin when looking for internships, apprenticeships, academic camps and other enrichment opportunities. These challenges are compounded for students from low-income or underrepresented backgrounds who often lack the resources or culture capital to identify educational and enrichment activities outside of the classroom.

Through our one-stop website and centralized human-outreach approach, Exploradoor directly connects youth (ages 13-18+) with opportunities based on their individual interests and expands their knowledge of career opportunities. Exploradoor also provides its own work-based learning experiences for college and high-school students via Exploradoor internship programs.

Exploradoor.com features over 125 programs. Over the past 12 months, we have had over 30,000 visitors and made over 3200 connections to programs. We also visited/presented at over 30 school/community events. The demographic makeup of our platform users is 50% black, 20% Hispanic, 14% white, 7% Asian and the remainder other. More than half of our users identify as low-income.

We are requesting a grant of $7500 to help cover the costs of college student internships over the course of 2024. We seek to fund stipends for college interns to work part-time at a rate of $15/hour for 500 hours over the course of the year. Our college interns focus on community and school in-person outreach (via presentations and tabling events), research and collection of youth development information, and assist with creating marketing materials and processes for our high school interns.

Project Title: Drexel Academy Elementary School
Project Description:

Drexel Academy (Drexel) is a donor-supported elementary school that provides exceptional education to PreK through 5th-grade students in north Tulsa’s historically marginalized community, inspiring the development of servant-leaders who achieve academic, personal and professional success. Drexel’s educational model places great emphasis on academic proficiency, academic rigor, academic equity, extended school day (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), expanded learning opportunities, social and academic enrichment, social and emotional learning (SEL), restorative justice, character-based education, servant leadership, and small class sizes that cap at 15 students per grade, per class (student-teacher ratio 15:1).
Currently, we have 100 students in grades Pre-K to 5th, as well as a growing waitlist of parents eager to enroll their children. Over 90% of our students are at or below the poverty line and qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our students and family demographics include 92% Black/African American and 2%White (Hispanic Origin) and 6% Indigenous/American Indian.
Since forming in 2016, Drexel’s objective has been to provide a high-quality private education for underserved children. To help ensure the best learning outcome possible, our teachers provide developmentally-based learning opportunities for students that help build social, interpersonal, cognitive, and language skills to establish a foundation for later success in school and life. We celebrate independent thinking, self-expression, individual worth, and creativity to enhance our students’ growth. In fact, this approach is at the core of what makes Drexel Academy’s Preschool program so effective. Additionally, our teachers make one-on-one education a priority whenever possible. This unique approach improves educational outcomes for our students and is why we maintain low turnover rates among students, especially those that are two grade levels below in their academic proficiency.
