Project Title: Counselors in Training Program
Project Description:

Indian Lake Christian Camp is a rustic summer camp in Harford County, Maryland. Established in 1969, camp has served thousands of people through day and overnight camps, weekend rentals, archery and homeschooling programs. The mission of Indian Lake Christian Camp is to build relationships between Christ, each other, and nature. We believe these relationships are foundational to the healthy development of the mind, body, heart, and spirit. These connections are the groundwork for positive character formation, appreciation for creation and other humans, and recognizing our longing for God. Our summer camp is a place where kids have the opportunity to nurture these connections through learning, worship, and play. Over the week, campers develop and grow in independence and confidence through trying new things and becoming self-reliant. Because kids escape their everyday lives, school, and activities, they find an amazing experience that only happens at camp! Being Christian based, camp does not decimate, we believe that camp is for everyone.
Since 2020, there has been a shift in stress, anxiety, and confidence in kids and teens. One week of summer camp can change the trajectory of a child’s life. Indian Lake’s Counselor in Training (CIT) program works to provide a leadership pipeline to help kids transition from camper to leader. Since 2021, this program has helped instill confidence, increase social skills, experience group facilitation and stretched over 150 CITs. We would like to expand this program with more class options with a more robust curriculum.
Currently CITs are mentored by Summer Staff as they lead groups of campers to activities, participate in group discussions and set-up and tear down equipment. We would like to increase their leadership training with a dedicated staff that meets with CITs each day to teach them conflict mediation, social dynamics and behavior management.

Project Title: Looking Good for Christmas
Project Description:

Hopeful Hair’s "Looking Good for Christmas" project is a heartwarming initiative dedicated to brightening the holiday season for foster and adopted children in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. We believe every child deserves to experience the joy and confidence that comes with looking and feeling their best during the holidays.

This project’s main goal is to provide essential hair care services to 40 children who, due to various circumstances, might not have the opportunity to receive the special care and attention they deserve. With the assistance of skilled stylists and generous volunteers, we aim to transform these children’s appearance and, more importantly, their self-esteem.

The "Looking Good for Christmas" project will include fun and festive hair care events where the children can receive professional hair styling, grooming, and pampering. Our approach involves collaboration with local foster care agencies, children’s homes, and community organizations to identify and invite children who would most benefit from these services.

Our commitment to racial equity and community engagement drives this project. We believe that every child, regardless of their background, deserves to feel cherished during the holiday season. By fostering a sense of belonging and self-worth, we align with the values of the Hermanowski Foundation and other partners who share our vision of a brighter future for these children.

Hopeful Hair is humbly seeking support from the Hermanowski Foundation to make "Looking Good for Christmas" an unforgettable experience for these deserving children. Your assistance will help us bring holiday cheer, love, and a renewed sense of self-esteem to these remarkable young individuals.

Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: After School Theatre Program
Project Description:

The Mission of The Apollo Civic Theatre engages, inspires, entertains and challenges audiences with theatrical productions that range from the classics to new works; to train and support the next generation of theatre artists; to provide arts education programs that promote life-long learning to a diverse community; and to celebrate the essential power of the theatre to illuminate our common humanity.
The Spring Youth After-School Music Theatre Program will be held for 10 weeks, January-March 2023, with performances week 11. During the theatre program participants will learn voice projection, vocal technique, how to connect with an audience, scene study, script analysis, set design, set building, light design and audio visual instruction.
Through the creative process in the theatre at-risk youth learn they can and are contributing to the world around them and that their perspectives are unique and valuable. Numerous evidence-based studies over the years have shown that at-risk youth who participate in the arts do better in school, are more likely to graduate from high school, attend college, find meaningful employment and be active members of their community. Through the spring youth theatre, Apollo Civic Theatre’s goal is to bring together at-risk youth, the theatre and community engaging them in a unique and significant way not offered elsewhere in Martinsburg.
Our unserved target population is Martinsburg which is located in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. The Martinsburg community serves a city where 27.4% live in poverty, which is well above the national average of 13%.
The participants are at-risk youth and their families. The approach is to involve the youth in the theatre and bring the family in to volunteer alongside their children. Engaging the family in several areas of the theatre such as chaperoning, ushering, stage set-up, concessions, ticket sales, and public relations.

Project Description:

The program will be called “Reading for the Stars” and will be for four-year olds to prepare them for kindergarten. This would be the only program of its kind. The children will focus on developing their reading skills, building social skills, fostering a love for learning, and establishing routines. By attending this program, we will instill a love for reading and be able to service the parents of these children by giving the students a safe, innovative space to attend the program. We hope that great experiences with wonderful books will spark the imagination and support to learn key early reading skills. This will ensure the children are on their way to success as readers and students. We will be able to assess the students in this program and assess their literacy understanding bi-weekly throughout the program to give us a solid track of progress. We feel that if the students show improvement our program was a success. We will also send home surveys twice a year to gauge the success of the program from the families we serve.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 10/9/2023
Requested Amount: 10000

Project Title: Islamic Center of Detroit Food Security Program
Project Description:

The Islamic Center of Detroit is respectfully requesting $10,000 in grant funding from the Hermanowski Foundation to purchase food for our weekly food pantry that serves low and no-income citizens living in the Brooks, Fiskhorn, Warrendale, and Cody Rouge neighborhoods of Detroit, MI. This program provides food security for the impoverished, vulnerable, homeless, and disabled citizens residing in our service area. With a poverty rate of 40%, and an unemployment rate of 10%, the area served by ICD (zip code 48228) is one of the most impoverished in the nation. (Niche 2023)

The mission of the Islamic Center of Detroit (ICD) is to serve the most vulnerable people within Metropolitan Detroit through the Muslim faith, Islamic principles, and a fundamental belief in assisting others. In following this mission, ICD has served over 2,500 individuals (or 500 families of 5) with food from our food pantry each week, free of charge, since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although we have been able to meet the demand for food security in school children and their families, we have discovered a growing need amongst the unemployed, disabled, and senior populations. In fact, requests for assistance from these citizens have increased three-fold amongst our constituency. We know that expanding this program to add more disabled, homebound, and senior aged citizens will be successful because we currently have the capacity to serve over 135,000 meals per week to school age children (under 18) in metro Detroit alone.

Specifically, through the ICD Food Security Program, we will serve 2,500 unique citizens each week in metro Detroit by providing them with food pantry items, including: canned goods, vegetables, fruits, bread, beans, and pasta. This means that 2,500 unique citizens that are isolated at home, in assisted living, homeless shelters, or on the street, will be served, thus meeting this ever-expanding food insecurity need.
