Project Title: Materials for Children Receiving Mental Health and Child Welfare Services
Project Description:
Directions for Living (DFL) has a rich history in the Tampa Bay community of healing and preventing trauma due to homelessness, mental illness, and addiction. For 40 years, DFL has served local residents of all ages by providing crucial research-supported and evidence-based behavioral health services to tens of thousands of clients annually. Children are some of our most vulnerable clients and it is of insurmountable importance to DFL that our child clients receive the highest quality of care possible. Part of this is ensuring that our clinicians and case managers have the necessary tools to advance improved health outcomes, resolve the impact of trauma, build resiliency, and restore hope for our young people.
DFL is respectfully requesting funding for the purchase of books, workbooks, art supplies, and therapeutic toys to support this goal. DFL has numerous programs that these materials would be used in ranging from Children’s Outpatient services, Assisted Outpatient Treatment, Early Childhood Consultation, BabyCAT, and High Fidelity Wraparound. When a child comes into DFL care, it is often because they have experienced trauma or homelessness, they may have been identified by the child welfare system or the school system as needing support, or have been refered by mental health court. Our clients need these lifesaving services. Having therapy toys and games such as puppets, coloring supplies, The Empathy Game, and workbooks like the CBT Toolbox Worksheets, transforms these children’s care. Our clinicians and case managers need these supplies to provide quality care and, frankly, we can never have enough. Unfortunately, these are rarely covered by our current funding streams and they are costly to purchase and replace. The purchase of these materials will help improve and transform the lives of our young clients, and support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation would be invaluable to them and DFL.
