Project Title: Children’s Justice Center Program
Project Description:
The CJC is an award-winning program that provides a successful multi-disciplinary team response for 1,600 children ages 17 and under who have been victims of serious physical abuse, shaken baby, sexual abuse and exploitation, drug endangerment, domestic violence, witness to domestic violence or a violent crime, trafficking and child homicide, and more. Each year, over 3,200 children, teens, and family members walk through their doors seeking help, healing, and guidance after they have been a victim of or witnessed a serious crime.
The program provides comprehensive services which empower children so that small voices can be heard in the criminal justice system. Rather than going to a police station, which can be traumatic for a child, children come to the CJC for supportive, wraparound services, including:
1) A forensic interview, conducted by a trained, dedicated professional, in a soothing, child-friendly setting which enables children to tell their story and safely seek justice after a crime has been committed against them.
2) Medical examination services by expert medical staff who help reassure children and families of their health and ability to recover physically from abuse.
3) Client Emergency Funds are engaged on an as-needed basis to families requiring immediate stabilization, to access food, clothing, shelter, and safety after a crisis.
4) Connection to trauma-informed therapists and victim reparation funds to ensure financial strain on the family is not a barrier to accessing essential mental health services.
5) A team of professionals meet to review the case, discuss how to best ensure the safety and wellbeing of the child, and support prosecution efforts to hold the offender accountable.
6) Case management teams provide support throughout the criminal justice process to ensure the child and family members are adjusting well and to provide referral to any additional resources that are needed.
