Project Title: Stay KidSafe!
Project Description:

KidSafe has developed practical ways to strengthen families and protect children from falling victim to sexual abuse and trafficking. Our proven Stay KidSafe! program empowers children to stay safe from abuse through its in-school discussions of technology, body boundaries, trusted adults, and the importance of valuing and respecting oneself. In line with Florida’s mandate for child abuse/child-trafficking prevention education for students Grades K-12, KidSafe has created a new 3-D animation platform, supported by the Florida Department of Education, to ensure the accessibility and ease of delivery for its proven messaging which has educated 60,000 Florida children and 30,000 child-serving adults since 2009.
A grant of $7,500 will assist KidSafe Foundation in bringing its program into a minimum of twelve Palm Beach County Schools that are already engaged through our programming staff and ready to begin the Stay KidSafe! program in K – 5th grades in the fall of the 2022-2023 academic year touching a minimum of 12,000 PBC students. Our programming staff will interface with classroom teachers to ensure that they are using the programs’ accompanying lesson plans and teacher guidance materials appropriately. Teachers and guidance counselors will be personally encouraged by our program staff and will receive guidance in providing the program to students . To further encourage teachers, we will offer incentives that will motivate their interest and involvement in the program.
As part of our in-person guidance, we will highlight the accompanying books that we are giving to each classroom in grades K-2, showing teachers how the books can reinforce their teaching of Stay KidSafe! concepts in the classroom. Teachers and guidance counselors may benefit from reviewing the parent guidebook materials themselves to strengthen their understanding of the program concepts and may also share the guidebooks with parents, offering to lend them as they see fit.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/2/2022
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Digital Programs – Wings of Friendship
Project Description:

The Friendship Journey has been providing programs throughout Broward County that enhance inclusion opportunities for children and young adults with special needs such as autism, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, etc., since 2012. Recently we have been able to expand our reach with our virtual sessions into Palm Beach County and beyond.

Our organization is primarily volunteer based with 80 youth volunteers’ high school and college aged, 20 adult volunteers and with one part time administrative assistant. We are led by a dedicated, all volunteer, Board of Directors comprised of local professionals who are expericened with working, either professionally or personally, with children and young adults with special needs.

Those we serve have a need to be involved and experience social normalcies. Unfortunately, those with special needs have already been left out of many social spheres and the longing to socialize has only become stronger with the need for social distancing during COVID. A solution was needed to allow youth to continue gathering, learning, and expressing themselves. Therefore, we created two virtual programs, Virtual Hangouts and Camp Wings of Friendship (WOF) that offer activities to foster mentoring friendships.
Wings of Friendship (WOF) is a collaboration between The Friendship Journey of South Florida and Dylan’s Wings of Change of Newtown, Connecticut. Our nonprofit organizations connected by chance and began working together just before the COVID-19 crisis

WOF comprises 15 hours of weekly activities, including dance parties, field trips, sign language, art, theater, cooking, and more. These activities foster meaningful connections with neuro-typical peers while also helping participants understand and embrace their identities. Guest speakers volunteer teaching life skills, and organizations/businesses perform virtual tours. Programs are year-round; in 2021 we completed our second summer of Camp Wings of Friendship and served over 150 families from ten different states across the country.

Today’s Date: 3/2/2022
Requested Amount: $7,000

Project Title: Children’s Cancer Navigation
Project Description:

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, their days quickly fill with treatments and doctor visits. Their parents struggle to analyze overwhelming amounts of information to achieve the best outcome for their child. This always involves a myriad of medical specialties and procedures. Low-income and non-English speaking families face greater obstacles to achieving positive outcomes due to language barriers.

Although cancer care and survival rates have vastly improved over the years, it comes with a steep price. Even families fortunate to have some form of health insurance struggle with extremely high deductibles, prescriptions costs, and innumerable out-of-pocket and un-covered expenses. When you also consider that one parent usually must quit their full-time job to care for their sick child, as this is often what is necessary, it is not surprising that families often find themselves in severe financial crisis and on the verge of homelessness. A study by the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that families with a child stricken with cancer were 2.5 times more likely to declare bankruptcy, as average treatment costs can easily reach $100,000 or more EACH YEAR their child remains in treatment.

The 3rd largest percentage of children diagnosed with cancer in the state of Florida live in Palm Beach County. Consequently, 70% of our clients are children. Cancer Alliance of Help and Hope (CAHH) strongly advocates for each child throughout treatment and beyond. We work collaboratively with the child’s family, medical team and through outreach to local, state, and national resources to ensure that each child’s needs are met. Our method of coordinating education and support is critical and has been shown to increase quality of life AND overall chance of recovery and survival. In 2020 we served 1,000 clients, 70% being children.

Project Title: General Operating Support
Project Description:

The Center for Humanistic Change is requesting $1,000 to support General Operating costs. A general operating support grant would support CHC in its mission to give people, especially youth, the knowledge and tools they need to make better-informed and more positive life choices. The ability to make healthy choices is critical when people face peer pressure, loss, painful transitions and other difficulties. Armed with positive skills, participants are better able to make healthy decisions and avoid destructive behaviors while building resiliency. The grants that CHC receives are typically restricted for program specific use. These program specific grants do not address the need of the agency to cover general operating expenses

Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): CHC does not currently have any commitments for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Project Title: Fostering Futures
Project Description:

Fostering Futures provides youth ages 12-18 residing in Los Angeles County with entrepreneur training. This intensive program provides participants with foundational knowledge, resources, and support to embark on their entrepreneurial journeys.

During summer 2022, we will conduct three cohorts. Cohort A will consist of current foster youth, Cohort B will consist of English language speakers, and Cohort C will encompass Dual Immersion. This program will serve a diverse student body, focusing on entrepreneurship education for young people from under-resourced areas. Most of our Youth are people of color, including over three-quarters of Black and Latin X heritage.

We utilize guiding principles developed by helping dispel the common myths of entrepreneurship and shaping youth’s understanding of the entrepreneurial journey. This approach has a bias towards action aligned with "learning by doing" techniques and helps youth quickly get their ventures off the ground.

Our goal is to inspire these young learners to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and launch successful small businesses. We hope that the alumni continue to run their businesses long after they complete the program or go on to build new companies that create jobs and drive economic growth. Entrepreneurship education not only changes the lives of young learners but also kickstarts inclusive growth and changes communities

Project Title: Education & Mentoring
Project Description:

Cycle Breakers Breaking Chains is a vital 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the prevention of gun-violence in the United States. As the CEO and founder, I know deeply the need for an organization that provides mentorship to at-risk youth as they transition into adulthood. The parent of a gun violence survivor myself, I took notice of the severe lacking in gun violence prevention programs for children and youth. As the school shooting rates continue to rise, Cycle Breakers was born.

Currently offering our services in the state of Kentucky, we intend for our impact to be national. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive program that fosters personal growth, education, accountability, mentoring and responsibility to at-risk youth – whether that be socioeconomically or due to mental health. We currently offer a curriculum-based program in partnership with local schools and Boys and Girls Clubs. It is open – beginning at age 12 – to youth and young adults and will address cognitive behaviors, conflict resolution, coping with trauma, mental health, sex education and healthy relationship indicators and will come with backing material to help demonstrate the life skills learned.
Cycle Breakers Breaking Chains is a new and growing and was severely impacted during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Staff and volunteer numbers dwindled as we restructured our programs to evolve with the times. Ultimately, the organization cannot meet any of its set goals without an increase in donations.
