Project Title: Weekend Food Backpack Program for School Children
Project Description:

We propose to provide food on weekends for 2,200 students in free and reduced fee lunch programs in our community elementary and middle schools.
Our community has a low unemployment rate, high median housing costs, and low median income. This is a recipe for financial insecurity for working families. The poverty rate is at 18.5% overall. We know that over 56% of single parent families live below the poverty level. The 2,200 students that we are working to reach with our weekend nutrition program receive free or reduced lunch at their schools on school days. We are trying to make sure that food insecurity on weekends does not lead to further financial difficulties for those who are already at risk to pay for the necessities of living.
We plan to gradually transfer responsibility for these backpacks to community organizations (faith based, charitable organizations, corporations, neighborhood groups, etc.,) who will take responsibility for schools or areas containing multiple schools. Using our current model, Northlands Rescue Mission purchases food, and volunteers handle, pack, and deliver to schools. Last year, we served over 750 students. In the transition to community process, we would serve as trainer, overseer, umbrella, safety net. We are confident that we could use "adopt-a-school" or "adopt-a-neighborhood" (if multiple schools) to turn over the ownership and responsibility to community partners.
Any funding requests are for food only.

Project Title: Birthday Parties in a Box – for Children In Need
Project Description:

Unfortunately, for many children their birthdays are NOT happy; but are uncertain, sad, and lonely — and they’re often not celebrated due to a multitude of circumstances beyond their control.

We partner with child advocates to provide birthday parties to children who might not otherwise have one. Once we receive a request, we pull together a unique and customized Birthday Box for the specific child which includes: tableware, decorations, party activity, party favors, cupcakes and candles, and a birthday gift and card. We then provide the birthday box to the parent or caregiver, dignifying their role in the child’s life and making them the birthday hero!

We anticipate providing 250 "Birthday Boxes" to children in need in 2022, at the cost of $100 each. A grant from the Hermanowski Foundation would enable our volunteer-run organization the means to prepare for and provide birthday cheer and celebration for children in need.

Fully volunteer-led and with no overhead, 100% of the funds will go towards this specific effort!

Project Title: Developing Curriculum & Assessment for Upower Programming: Collaboration with Seattle University Kinesiology Department Fellowship Program
Project Description:

Upower offers trauma-sensitive physical activity to youth at multiple sites throughout King County at no cost to youth and families. Our classes create a safe space to get youth moving and provide access to the health and social-emotional benefits of play. In collaboration with Seattle University’s Kinesiology Department Fellowship program, Upower has hired a Fellow to design, implement, analyze, and interpret Upower’s curriculum and programming in order to measure, revise and strengthen our programming and its benefits for youth. The Project will be identified and carried out in four phases over a 2-year period and will cost Upower $21,105.26 per year. Across our sites, Upower works with sensitive populations and youth who are underserved, complicating our ability to collect data on the youth and our services. This partnership with the Seattle University Kinesiology Department will increase our capacity and creativity in data collection and analysis and will provide a foundation for improving our programs and outcomes for each youth and community. This partnership will enrich our ability to provide trauma-informed movement, build relationships with youth and support youth as they build confidence, develop trust, pro-social connections, and social skills, cultivate leadership skills that help them prepare for the future. Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will be used to support the second year of the project.
