Project Title: Career Pathways to Independence
Project Description:
The Career Pathways to Independence program with Hibiscus Children’s Center helps foster youth complete high school and prepare for college, a trade and/or employment in the Career Pathways to Independence Program. It is a vital educational and career preparation program for youth at the Hibiscus Children’s Village in Vero Beach. Youth are helped to succeed in school through wrap around support and tutoring and 21st century skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and technology literacy are developed. The youth who participate in this program will be better equipped for independence, the world of employment, advancing their education and to be successful, productive community members. The career preparation programs we offer teens are essential to success in leaving the foster care system, are substantially underfunded. This is a high leverage opportunity for The Community Enrichment Fund. Hibiscus Children’s Village serves as a nurturing residence for youth escaping abuse, neglect or abandonment. Most of our residents have endured deprivation of one sort or another for years before moving into the Village. In most cases this means the children are behind in educational achievement and at risk of “aging out” of the foster system without earning a high school diploma or GED. The earnings gap and social dysfunction that dropouts suffer is well documented. The Village is often the last, yet best, chance to give these children the educational foundation, life skills training, and labor force preparation mandatory to function independently in our society.
