Project Title: Emergency Foster Shelter
Project Description:
Grandma’s Place is an emergency foster shelter for children who have been victims of abuse or neglect, operating 24 hours/7 days a week, 365 days per year, with wake staff around the clock. The program provides constant care with on-site therapies provided by independent contractors in the following disciplines: speech, physical, occupational, psychological counseling and other therapies as needed. The shelter has a capacity of 16 children per night, and is licensed for children age 0-12, although the agency is unique in Palm Beach County as the only one certified to care for children aged 0-7. This is vital as the majority of PBC abuse victims are younger than 6.
Children remain at the shelter for periods from one day to over a year, until it is safe for them to go home, live with relatives, or find a loving adoptive or foster home. Regardless of the length of stay, we provide each child with a Case Plan that addresses their individual, physical, emotional, social, and educational needs. A quarterly meal plan is developed by a registered dietician and followed by staff to ensure proper nutrition for all children. School aged children attend local public schools and our staff coordinates with the school to assure that each child’s educational needs are being met.
Art lessons and music therapy sessions are held weekly as a comprehensive and effective tool to reduce feelings of loss, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and helplessness that are often associated with abuse and homelessness; and promote self-expression, interpersonal communication, and scholastic excellence. Children have tremendous resiliency; many children who have suffered abuse or abandonment become successful, healthy adults with relatively few problems. The more protective factors and resources that are available, the more likely these children will overcome adversities and obtain positive outcomes.
