Project Title: Victims of Child Abuse
Project Description:

Children, Youth & Family Services (CYFS) has served the Charlottesville area for over 90 years. We believe that every child has value and a future rich with possibilities. Our programs are all about kids and giving them the chance to reach their full potential. Under our Ready Kids Framework, CYFS impacts over 6,600 children and families annually.

The CYFS\’s Victims of Child Abuse (VOCA) program offers an immediate response to treatment needs of children who have been abused, neglected or exposed to family violence. VOCA provides professional counseling services to children and adolescent victims of child abuse or neglect, and to non-abusing family members, such as parents, siblings, extended family, and foster parents. All services are provided by a VOCA Treatment Specialist, a Masters-level Social Worker or Counselor.

VOCA lowers the risk of abuse to children in three ways:
1. By raising awareness of abuse in a family, the risk of further abuse is thereby reduced;
2. Early treatment reduces the risk of destructive behaviors in the future, such as self-harm and substance abuse;
3. Given the empirical evidence that untreated abuse victims are likely to become abusers themselves, the incidence of abuse and neglect in future generations is reduced, lowering both personal and societal costs.

CYFS is committed to measuring our effectiveness and long term impacts on the clients we serve. During FY2013 (July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013) VOCA served a total of 113 primary victims of abuse, 78 family members, and provided training to 127 individuals in our community. The goals for the VOCA program are as follows:
• Kids become socially and emotionally healthy and relate well to others.
• Kids experience positive parent/child and family interaction.
• Kids are not abused or neglected.

Project Title: \"Art Matters\"
Project Description:

The Museum’s comprehensive “Art Matters” initiative for school-aged children in South Florida consists of seven core components.

• School Tours
Experiential gallery tours of the Museum’s collections and exhibitions. Supporting Next Generation Sunshine and Common Core State Standards, curriculum-connected tours engage and challenge students to build skills and achieve greater understanding of Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics through the visual arts.

• Education Mornings
Grades K-12 are invited to participate in a two hour creative and stimulating experience. One portion is a studio workshop for students to create a work of art based on a selected theme. The other portion involves a docent guided tour investigating the theme in greater detail by looking at original works of art displayed in the Museum’s galleries.

• $250 Field Trip Grants
Grant awards of $250 which help fund Museum excursions for K-12 schools in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach counties unable to cover the cost of transportation.

• Teacher In-Service
Professional development workshops for K-12 school teachers centering on arts integration – the practice of using arts strategies to build skills and teach classroom subjects across different disciplines, including Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Utilizing artworks found in our Collection, a hands-on studio activity reinforces the ideas and strategies discussed.

• Lesson Plans for Educators
Online teaching aids for applying the visual arts across the curriculum, making it easy to bring art into the classroom. Each lesson focuses on an academic skill that correlates with Next Generation Sunshine State and Common Core State Standards.

• Art Classes for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
In collaboration with FAU Center for Autism & Related Disabilities, the Museum’s studio Art School offers special classes in creative expression for children on the autism spectrum. Through sensory-based visual art activities, students work to increase awareness of self and others; cope with symptoms, stress, and traumatic experiences; enhance cognitive abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.

• Outreach for Children: Meet a Master, Create a Masterpiece
This year-round afterschool outreach for underserved students from local area schools is provided to six non-profit social service agencies. The program consists of hands-on art activities, art history study, a Field Trip to the Museum, and free BMA passes for the children’s families.
