According to a study by the California Endowment: \u201c\u201cYoung adults in California experience mental health challenges at alarming rates, with more than three-quarters reporting anxiety in the last year, more than half reporting depression, 31% experiencing suicidal thinking and 16% self-harm.:<\/p>\n
NAMI-SCC brings Ending the Silence (ETS) into high schools and middle schools in Santa Clara County. ETS is a 50-minute interactive and transformational presentation devoted to giving students an opportunity to learn about mental illness through an informative presentation, short videos, and personal testimonies. <\/p>\n
A trained two-person team, one being an individual who shares their own journey with a diagnosable mental health condition, delivers the program. Students learn about symptoms and indicators of mental illness and are given resources aimed at helping themselves, their friends, or family members who may be in need of support. <\/p>\n
At the conclusion of the presentation, students are given resource cards with valuable phone numbers and websites of mental health agencies and youth support services, along with a list of symptoms\/warning signs of mental illness. Postcards are mailed home to parents informing them about the presentation. <\/p>\n
Moving stories from positive role models have the power to change kids\u2019 views. The discussion gives students the rare opportunity to ask questions about mental health challenges to people who have lived it. The presentation\u2019s message of empathy and hope encourages students to actively care for themselves and their friends. It also teaches them it\u2019s okay to talk about what they\u2019re feeling. ETS covers:

\n2.\tFacts and statistics about youth and mental health conditions
\n3.\tWhen, where, and how to get help for themselves or their friends
\n4.\tWhen it\u2019s not okay to keep a secret\n<\/p>\n
