CHAMPs Afterschool Program, located on St. Helena Island, SC on the campus of Church of the Harvest Apostolic serves at-risk students in grades K\u20138 through structured academic support, mentoring, and daily meals in partnership with the Beaufort County School District. All services are provided free of charge to ensure equitable access. Many of the students we serve attend one of the lowest-performing schools in the district and struggle with reading proficiency, which impacts performance across all academic subjects.
\nWe are seeking $10,000 to launch a dedicated Literacy Intervention Initiative during the upcoming academic year (September\u2013April). This project will fund the hiring of a certified teacher with specialized literacy training to provide targeted one-on-one and small-group reading instruction four days per week (12 hours weekly). The literacy specialist will work with approximately 10\u201315 K\u20138 students who are reading below grade level and require focused intervention to strengthen phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
\nFunds will support instructional stipends and literacy assessment tools to track measurable growth. Progress will be monitored through reading fluency benchmarks, comprehension assessments, and collaboration with classroom teachers. Our goal is for at least 70% of participating students to demonstrate documented improvement in reading proficiency by the end of the program year.
\nBy addressing literacy gaps early and consistently, this initiative will equip vulnerable students with the foundational skills necessary for academic confidence, improved classroom performance, and long-term educational success.
