Project Title: Multi-Sensory Program

As a valuable educational resource for our community’s most vulnerable families, inclusion and accessibility have always been central to our mission at Miami Children\u2019s Museum. Families with children with developmental disabilities and in need of programming adapted to diverse learning styles have been able to rely on us to provide inclusive educational enrichment opportunities. Currently, the Museum offers Sensory Friendly Saturdays, a monthly program when the Museum opens early to provide two dedicated hours of activities with a modified and supportive environment. This program was created for children with global developmental delays, sensory processing disabilities, or on the autism spectrum. Adjustments to the Museum’s exhibit during the program include limiting crowds, dimming the lights, and lowering the sounds throughout the galleries. The Museum education team provides adaptive art activities that explore various cultures and art and includes a live theater performance. The Museum seeks support to expand its current multi-sensory program and has developed an 18-month plan to meet the demands of the South Florida disability community. Funding from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would support (1) enhancement of the monthly Sensory Friendly Saturday program with contracted certified therapeutic professionals such as Applied Behavior Analysts, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Art Therapist, and Music Therapist; (2) break the financial barriers by providing free admission for Sensory Friendly Saturday programs; (3) host an Autism Awareness Month community program in April 2022, including resources designed to increase the understanding of people on the autism spectrum and featuring professional artists that represent the autism community; and (4) purchase new therapeutic tools to further develop our guest\u2019s experience, and are aligned with the Museum’s new standards of wellness due to COVID-19. Marketing efforts to promote the new programming will include personal outreaches to the Museum\u2019s partners such as The Victory Center and others. <\/p>\n
