Middle school youth in Northwest Indiana experience elevated disciplinary referrals and disengagement, often driven by cultural misunderstanding, limited conflict resolution skill development, and reduced access to structured enrichment opportunities outside of school hours. While schools frequently track detention, suspension, and expulsion data, fewer consistently measure student bonding, belonging, and cross-cultural connection.
\nA key barrier is the lack of developmentally appropriate CRE instruction delivered in non-school settings where youth conflicts often arise. Brite Minds Peacebuilders addresses this gap by positioning Saturday OST programming as a proactive environment for teaching and practicing solid academic skills and confidence in conflict resolution skills\u2014a necessary aspect for individuals learning and personal growth.
\nBrite Minds Saturday School will be a hybrid program serving middle school students in grades 4\u20139. The program integrates structured academic supports in Language Arts, Math and STEM. It includes the use of SEL (social-emotional learning) techniques, conflict resolution education for this volatile age group, leadership development, and responsive service learning\/volunteer experiences.
\nCore CRE components include:
\n\u2022 Non-violent communication skills, peer mediation and collaborative problem-solving
\n\u2022 Conflict de-escalation coupled with SEL (social-emotional learning) techniques
\n\u2022Regional historical awareness and perspective-taking
\n\u2022 Love of self, community, nation and the world
\nEvaluation measures will include:
\n1. Pre- and post-surveys measuring students\u2019 understanding of cultural diversity and shared values
\n2. Student reflections assessing cultural relevance and fit of CRE strategies
\n3. Facilitator logs documenting CRE use prior to exclusionary responses
\n4. Participation and engagement tracking<\/p>\n
