The Dennis Price Jr. Foundation seeks support from the Hermanowski Foundation to launch a new DJ\u2019s Care Closet in a high-need Title I school in Memphis, Tennessee. DJ\u2019s Care Closet is more than just a supply cabinet\u2014it is a thoughtfully designed, boutique-style \u201cstore\u201d located within a school, where students experiencing poverty, housing insecurity, or family crisis can discreetly access essential items they need to attend school with confidence and dignity. <\/p>\n
Each Care Closet is stocked with brand-new clothing, shoes, hygiene products, school supplies, undergarments, and seasonal gear\u2014resources too often out of reach for students in underserved communities. By removing these barriers, DJ\u2019s Care Closet supports attendance, academic focus, and overall student well-being. Students are referred by counselors, teachers, or administrators and can \u201cshop\u201d in a welcoming, judgment-free environment that restores a sense of agency and normalcy during difficult times. <\/p>\n
This $10,000 project will nearly fully fund the launch of one new DJ\u2019s Care Closet, covering startup supplies, shelving and racks, signage, inventory, and initial stocking. It will serve an estimated 200\u2013500 students in its first year alone, with the potential to grow annually. This initiative is grounded in our broader mission to eliminate preventable heart-related deaths by uplifting youth and supporting the whole child\u2014body, mind, and spirit. <\/p>\n

\nSources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The $175,000 budget reflects a three-year expansion plan to launch DJ\u2019s Care Closets in seven additional Title I schools across Memphis by 2028. This investment will allow us to reach hundreds more students with the essentials they need to attend school with dignity, confidence, and stability. We are actively pursuing additional funding to support this expansion and ensure the long-term sustainability of the program. While applying for grants is a new endeavor for our young organization, we are already building strong momentum. We received a $55,000 grant from the John Dustin Buckman Charitable Trust and have raised $27,336.72 from individual donors who believe deeply in our mission for the first three Care Closets. Generous in-kind donations valued at $41,922 from community partners like Ampro and TEKsystems have also helped us successfully launch our first three DJ\u2019s Care Closets. These early investments reflect growing community and philanthropic support\u2014and a shared belief in our vision to remove barriers to education and well-being for students in Memphis. <\/p>\n
