Project Title: Music Therapy for iCare Program
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
The iCare Program began in 2016 as a monthly nature-based activity for individuals with autism and related intellectual and developmental disabilities (A\/IDD). Many young people with special needs feel lost and become vulnerable to physical and mental deterioration due to isolation and lack of social connection when they leave school and are unable to work or attend college. The outdoor activities for persons with special needs hosted by Sea Turtle Adventures quickly grew in popularity, resulting in the iCare Program expanding to serving over 200 individuals each year. Currently, iCare hosts a day program three days per week and an additional six to seven social events each month. We strive to provide diverse experiences for enrichment to help the individuals we serve reach their potential and continue to grow. A critical component of the day program is Music Therapy, conducted by experienced professionals from Grace Notes Music Foundation. The iCare Program hosts two Music Therapy sessions per year, in the spring and fall, each for twelve consecutive weeks. The adults (18+) who participate in music therapy have shown immense growth, developed trust, and have found music to be an integral means of connection and communication. As soon as the Music Therapy sessions end, participants begin asking when the program will return. With 29% of families with a child with disabilities living at or below the poverty line, iCare is working diligently to enhance our capacity to offer life-changing resources, such as Music Therapy, to our day program. A generous grant of $3600 will cover two additional twelve-week sessions of music therapy, doubling the number of individuals who will experience enhanced communication and confidence.<\/p>\n
