The Charles & Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation\u2019s mission to improve and transform the lives of children in the U.S. in hopes of providing them with the necessary tools to succeed and achieve their full potential dovetails nicely with Grand Canyon Youth\u2019s (GCY\u2019s) mission to offer educational outdoor expeditions that connect young people to the transformative power of the rivers and canyons of the Southwest. Through our programs, we work to empower youth to live with purpose while discovering and caring for self, community, and the natural world. GCY would be thrilled to receive support from your foundation, enabling us to transform the lives of the next generation of young people TOGETHER. <\/p>\n
Since 1998, GCY has served over 13,500 young people (aged 10-19) from across the country. Our outdoor programs are progressively tiered to encourage participation at any experience level: from 1-day kayaking expeditions for elementary school youth, to multi-day rafting trips for middle schoolers, to multi-week expeditions down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon for high school students. Youth participate in every aspect of our expeditions, from paddling the boats through rapids, unloading gear and setting up camp, doing hands-on science and art, cooking healthy group meals, hiking side canyons, swimming in the river, and sleeping under the stars. Customized curriculums are facilitated by experts who join our expeditions, including field scientists, artists, land managers, park rangers, and professional outdoor guides. On our screen-free expeditions, youth have the opportunity to build confidence and community by facing challenges independently and as a team, which is so important for today\u2019s young people. To ensure cost is not a barrier to participation, GCY offsets expedition costs through year-round fundraising, and we offer youth applicants additional direct financial aid. <\/p>\n
