Project Title: Young Explorers Program
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
The Young Explorers Program extends traditional Boys & Girls Club services to youth experiencing homelessness, an underserved and disadvantaged group of children in our community, getting to the heart of our mission to serve \u201cthose who need us most.\u201d This includes a full, healthy meal and a safe place to learn and grow on school days from 2 to 6 p.m., on teacher planning days and intersessions periods, and during the summer. Most importantly, they have a safe and nurturing environment, with caring adults, and a chance to just be a \u201ckid.\u201d
\nWith regular attendance, we expect to see similar outcomes as we have seen from our other Club members: 86% improving academic performance, 80% improving their behavior, and 94% enjoying learning new things. A reduced rate of smoking or drug and alcohol use (87% of our teens vs. 65% nationally), and an increase in community involvement and volunteering (65% of teen members vs. 25% U.S. adults). The program will target 50 youth.
\nStability is important to proper childhood development, and the Boys & Girls Club offers another avenue for stability in their nomadic lives. It creates a place where each child can feel safe and accepted and where people listen to the child.
\nOur proven process indicates 72% of Club members develop a sense of belonging and say people at the Club \u201caccept me for who I am.\u201d Like all our members, the youth will receive academic assistance, which can\u2019t be successful without the physical and mental safe space we offer.<\/p>\n
