Project Title: Supporting Disadvantaged Youth in Attending The Theatre Lab\u2019s Summer Acting Camps
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
The mission of The Theatre Lab (TTL) is to transform lives through theatre education. The Theatre Lab\u2019s award-winning programs for children and teens provide substantive training and performance opportunities in an atmosphere of encouragement and exploration. Through robust summer and school-break camps and year-round Saturday classes, TTL improves young people\u2019s artistic, communication, teamwork, and writing skills. Led by many of DC\u2019s premier theatre artists and educators, these programs culminate in sold-out public performances. <\/p>\n
All TTL youth programs are composed of youth from various skill levels, as well as a range of ethnic, geographic and cultural backgrounds so that youth are exposed to new perspectives, learn ways to connect across differences, and communicate openly and effectively. Teaching Artists emphasize the importance of collaboration and ensemble-building, spending as much time developing the talents of ensemble members as those of lead performers. And, each student works closely with instructors to set ambitious goals for themselves, regardless of experience and skill level, and challenging and socially relevant material is chosen for exploration. In this way, every participant is able to make perceptible progress, feel pride, and have fun.<\/p>\n
Students from marginalized backgrounds rarely have the means to participate in structured arts programs, yet research has documented that arts programs have an uncommon ability to transform young people\u2019s lives. To meet this need, we provide one third of our students with full and partial camp scholarships each year. All scholarships are need-based, and all recipients are children living in poverty. Nearly half of scholarship recipients are from the lowest-resourced communities of DC, Wards 5, 6, 7, and 8. With your support, The Theatre Lab aims to serve 160 low-income and disadvantaged youth (and 530 students total) through our youth programs in 2019, providing life-changing opportunities to those who need them most. <\/p>\n
