Project Title: Waves of Healing: Youth Surf Therapy for Mental Health & Belonging
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
Groundswell Community Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides trauma-informed surf therapy for women and gender-expansive individuals. With the support of the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we seek funding to expand our youth programming\u2014offering accessible, culturally responsive surf therapy to youth ages 12\u201321 in San Diego, California.<\/p>\n
This program addresses the urgent mental health needs of young people who have experienced trauma, grief, or marginalization. Our surf therapy model combines mental health support, community connection, and somatic healing through the ocean. Each session is co-facilitated by licensed clinicians, trauma-informed surf instructors, and trained peer mentors.<\/p>\n
Participants learn surfing, mindfulness, and emotional regulation techniques in a supportive, identity-affirming space. Through the power of the ocean and community, youth build self-confidence, foster resilience, and find belonging.<\/p>\n
Funds will support youth scholarships, equipment, transportation, healthy snacks, and program facilitation costs\u2014ensuring no participant is turned away due to financial hardship. This program has a proven track record of reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and isolation in young people, while nurturing connection to self, others, and nature.<\/p>\n
