In 1956, a group of parents of children with disabilities found that no local preschools met their children\u2019s unique needs. Committed to quality education for all, the parents founded Arc Broward as a place where their children could learn and thrive. <\/p>\n
That vision still drives us today. While we now support 21 programs for infants through adults, our preschool continues to grow and thrive. With an enrollment of 60 children ages 18 months \u2013 6 years, the preschool has grown to a community model for adapting the early learning experience for children with developmental disabilities (autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome) and complex physical, social, and behavioral needs. Each child in the program has an Individualized Service Plan, a guide map to meeting their unique needs and goals. Certified teachers and trained assistants ensure a low adult-to-child ratio (as low as 1 adult per 1 child). We weave developmental opportunities into each part of the day \u2013 from small group experiences and quiet activities to active play and multi-sensory learning. The robust daily schedule provides a range of opportunities for skills-building, fostering the development of fine and gross motor skills, communication, socialization, self-help, and problem solving. Our goal is for each child to graduate from the program ready to learn in kindergarten. <\/p>\n
Working hand-in-hand with our teachers is our therapy team. Children receive intensive early intervention, including speech\/language, occupational, physical, and behavioral therapy from licensed and certified practitioners. These professionals work closely with the teachers to adapt classroom activities for the needs of individual children. <\/p>\n
While Arc Broward receives funding from Broward County Public Schools and The Batchelor Foundation, our cost exceeds the expense of providing such individualized programming. Support from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would offset the cost to provide these critical services.\n<\/p>\n
