Project Title: Children\u2019s Cancer Navigation

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, their days quickly fill with treatments & doctor visits. Their parents are forced to analyze overwhelming amounts of information to achieve the best outcome for their child, remission. This always involves a myriad of medical specialties & procedures. Low-income & non-English speaking families face greater obstacles achieving positive outcomes due to language barriers when receiving & providing pertinent medical information to doctors & hospitals on behalf of their child. <\/p>\n
Cancer care and survival rates have vastly improved over the years. However, it has come at a high price. Even families fortunate enough to have comprehensive health insurance struggle with extremely high deductibles, prescriptions costs, & innumerable out-of-pocket & un-covered expenses. When you also consider that one parent usually must quit their full-time job to care for their sick child, as this is often what is necessary, it is not surprising that families often find themselves in severe financial crisis & on the verge of homelessness. A 2013 study by the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that families with a child stricken with cancer were 2.5 times more likely to declare bankruptcy, as average treatment costs can easily reach $100,000 or more EACH YEAR. <\/p>\n
Astoundingly, the 3rd largest percentage of children diagnosed with cancer in the state of Florida resides in Palm Beach County. Consequently, 70% of our clients are children stricken with cancer. Cancer Alliance of Help & Hope (CAHH) strongly advocates for each child client throughout treatment & beyond. We work collaboratively with the child\u2019s family, medical team & through outreach to local, state, & national resources to ensure that each child\u2019s needs are met. Our method of coordinating education & support is critical & has been shown to increase the child\u2019s quality of life AND overall chance of recovery & survival. <\/p>\n
