Project Title: Comprehensive Services for Child Victims of Sexual Assault
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
Youth are disproportionately impacted by sexual violence. 19% of King County\u2019s total population is under the age of 18. However, despite making up less than one-fifth of the total population, almost half of KCSARC\u2019s clients are children and teenagers (47%). Studies suggest that sexual victimization in childhood or adolescence increases the likelihood of sexual revictimization in adulthood by two to 13.7 times. Survivors who have experienced recurrent victimization are more likely to report psychological distress, suicidality, and self-injury than those who have never experienced sexual victimization or have experienced only one form of victimization.<\/p>\n
The vulnerabilities of children and teenagers that open them up to an increased risk of violence also make it more difficult to seek support and services. Youth have specific concerns and barriers that reduce the likelihood that they will report their assault or abuse and seek services. Oftentimes, youth may not understand that they have been assaulted or abused. <\/p>\n
Other barriers include fears of retaliation, the possibility of losing housing or other needs if the perpetrator is a member of their household, as well as feelings of shame and guilt. This underscores the need for early intervention services and prevention education to limit the impacts of this violence and to prevent instances of victimization altogether.<\/p>\n
KCSARC serves clients through a comprehensive roster of free services in Spanish and English, including a 24-hour resource and crisis line, trauma-specific therapy, general, medical, and legal advocacy, and sexual violence prevention education. KCSARC\u2019s wraparound menu of services provides impactful primary and secondary intervention. Recovery is possible – early acknowledgement, belief, and trauma-informed responses to adverse childhood experiences promote healing. Children are resilient, and KCSARC\u2019s services are a vital service to the community, providing more than 2,000 children each year with access to early intervention and education.\n<\/p>\n
