Project Title: Expand Students’ Social-Emotional Education with Storytelling Residencies
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
NYC Kids Project seeks to create an inclusive society where all people are valued for who they are. We partner with schools across New York City, focusing on Title 1 schools, using puppetry and storytelling to create immersive experiences for young children through which they can practice empathy, inclusion and kindness.<\/p>\n
Our interactive experiences and classroom programs use puppets, storytelling, and facilitated dialogue to help children develop critical social-emotional skills, most notably empathy and social awareness. Our programs are intentionally designed to make children feel comfortable asking questions and processing ideas that they might otherwise not know when or how to articulate and to provide open-ended answers to those questions that they can continue to discuss in their classrooms and with their families.<\/p>\n
We currently have three school program offerings: Making Friends for Pre-K through 1st Grade, the Puppet Show for 2nd through 5th Grade and Storytelling Residencies. Our most recently added program, Storytelling Residencies include multi-week engagements for students in grades 2 through 5 combining empathy and social awareness, puppetry creation, and creative and language arts opportunities including improvisation, storytelling, and creative writing. Residencies explore issues that begin to surface as children age, such as bias, bullying, and gender equity, and position students to create their own stories.<\/p>\n
We are requesting a grant from the Hermanowski Foundation in the amount of $3,000.00 to enable us to bring our Storytelling Residencies to more students in 2025-2026. The grant will be used to provide a Storytelling Residency free of charge to a school that cannot otherwise afford our services. Your support will help our city\u2019s children, many of whom missed critical social development windows because of the pandemic, build their socio-emotional skills so that they can become active, engaged learners as well as contributors to a healthy, thriving community.\n<\/p>\n
