On behalf of the Islamic Center of Detroit (ICD), I am respectfully requesting $10,000 in grant funding from the Hermanowski Foundation to purchase food for our weekly food pantry that serves low and no-income citizens living in the Brooks, Fiskhorn, Warrendale, and Cody Rouge neighborhoods of Detroit, MI. ICD was opened to the public in January 2000. Since then, the ICD has been expanding by working on new projects that benefit both Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Some of these efforts include: a full-time school; Saturday school; Sunday school; after-school programming; a Quran program; youth empowerment tools and training; female empowerment workshops; MUHSEN Certified programming; community services (such as neighborhood clean ups, clothing drives, a daily meal line, and a weekly food pantry); mental health programming for youth, adults, and seniors; Ramadan activities; Imam services; and, recreational activities such as a girls’ and boys’ basketball, volleyball, soccer, and summer camps. Each year, ICD serves over 20,000 individuals in metro Detroit, regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, or sexual preference. <\/p>\n
The mission of the Islamic Center of Detroit (ICD) is to serve the most vulnerable people within Metropolitan Detroit through the Muslim faith, Islamic principles, and a fundamental belief in assisting others. In following this mission, ICD has served over 2,500 individuals (or 500 families of 5) with food from our food pantry each week, free of charge, since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although we have been able to meet the demand for food security in school children and their families, we have discovered a growing need amongst the unemployed, disabled, and senior populations. In fact, requests for assistance from these citizens have increased three-fold amongst our constituency. <\/p>\n
Specifically, through the ICD Food Security Program, we will serve 2,500 unique citizens each week in metro Detroit by providing them with food pantry items, including: canned goods, vegetables, fruits, bread, beans, and pasta. This means that 2,500 unique citizens that are isolated at home, in assisted living, homeless shelters, or on the street, will be served, thus meeting this ever-expanding food insecurity need. <\/p>\n
