Project Title: BAE NYC Arts Education Programming
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
BAE was formed to serve students who have been pushed to the margins of society, and it is a fundamental tenet of our work that our curricula center their needs, goals, values, and skills. For many of these students, BAE offers their first exposure to the performing arts in schools, provides representation through our diverse teaching artists, and allows them to experience attending a Broadway show or performing in front of a live audience. Additionally, our public space activations, such as street fairs and performances, foster community and family engagement in collaboration with the Broadway community.<\/p>\n
In New York City, we empower schools to revitalize their arts scene by offering engaging after-school performing arts programs for high school students. Led by professional Teaching Artists, our project-based approach uses design thinking to help students collaborate on creating musicals, podcasts, zines, dances, and concerts that showcase their talents and enrich the community. Our innovative curriculum enhances and transforms the students\u2019 overall school experience, increasing their engagement and improving their attitudes towards school and adult relationships. Using positive and relevant examples and language, BAE gave students the opportunity to see themselves and their communities reflected more accurately in past, present, and future narratives. Teaching Artists facilitate student-led, project-based learning initiatives that develop their social-emotional skills with classmates while engaging in art-making and creative youth development games. <\/p>\n
While in the classroom, we value process over product and social-emotional skill development over technical skill-development in accordance with our 3 organization-wide core values:<\/p>\n

\nAge Group To Be Served: BAE historically works with students in Title I schools, and also provides opportunities for community and family engagement through public space activations (street fairs and performances) alongside members of the Broadway community. Programming is developed to be responsive to our school partners\u2019 needs (assemblies, career nights, graduation, etc) and our community districts\u2019 needs. All of our programming exists to engage with and impact participants from underserved communities: Students and families in the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn. 80% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch; 30% of students are Latinx, 60% are Black, 5% are East Asian, 4% are MENASA, and 1% are White\/other; 17% of incoming sixth graders and 11% of incoming 9th graders enter with scores of proficient in both ELA and Math; 21% have special needs, 74% entering below grade level in Math and\/or English.<\/p>\n
