To address the low levels of educational attainment in the Hispanic community, the LSF supports students and families through three core areas: academic support, family resources, and post-secondary success. By providing opportunities for families to learn alongside their children, the LSF is able to set multiple generations on the path to success. These three initiatives work in concert, allowing students to transition from one program to another as they grow, to foster a college-going culture from an early age and create a strong and prosperous community for generations to come.

Funding from the Hermanowski Foundation will support the LSF’s academic support initiative, our Saturday Tutoring Program. PreK-12th grade students meet Saturday mornings during the school year at two sites in Washington, DC and Riverdale, MD, to receive one-on-one support in English and math. Students, who are typically two years behind their peers academically, work with the same tutor for the entire school year. During each session, students follow an evidence-based, customizable schedule that includes 30 minutes of reading, targeted math support, and homework assistance, in addition to 15 minutes of daily reading at home and 10 new books to build their own home libraries. Progress in reading and math proficiency is measured using aimsweb pre- and post-program assessments.

The LSF respectfully requests $10,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation to cover the costs of books, skills-based activities, workbooks, and breakfast for 130 students, as well as staff time to support volunteer tutors. The LSF is grateful for the opportunity to apply for funding to ensure our students receive the resources they need to thrive.

Total Project Budget: 148,210

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Prince Georges’ County, $60,000, confirmed; Lillian S.
